Better not overstay your visa in Singapore

I was online today booking a Delta mileage run to Singapore for next month. I've been there before, but couldn't remember if I needed a visa. Saw this when I checked:

I go over there a lot for work. I have to do work pass exempt and there is always the 90 day warning. I have to go on a mini vacation to the Philippines or Thailand for a couple of days.

I'll be in Comfort+. The seats are a bit better then economy, and along with a xanax, the time really flies

I'll proceed straight to BKK once in SIN. SIN is about the most boring city I've ever visited. And, I don't like spending $25 for a cocktail.

25 for a cocktail or 18 for a glass of wine! I go to the Navy exchange at Sembawang for bottles to bring back to the hotel. I usually stay at the Orchard Hilton.

The Royal Plaza on Scotts is nice too! Haven't been there in about 10 years... I'm a recovering PACFLT squid.

I kinda like the fact that laws mean something in Singapore.

I agree - somewhat. It'd be nice if laws meant something here too only we have too many of them and of those, too many are stupid, irrelevant, outdated and / or open for interpretation (to keep lawyers employed - keep in mind most lawmakers are lawyers...). I'd go for about 10% of the current body of laws, having them be relevant and sensible THEN having them be enforced / meaningful.

As I've said many times, one inherent problem with our system is that lawmakers have an incentive to constantly create new legislation leading to an ever-bloated codec of laws. Add to that the morass of regulations, government agency policies and quasi-laws stemming from delegated authority to bureaus, agencies, ministries, etc. and you get what we have today - too many laws, too many rules, too many restrictions, too many regulations and too many cops to the point where our "free" society is laughably restrictive and a de facto police state.

The inherent problem (like so many others) could be fixed with meaningful, effective term limits. The potential "kiss of death" for a lawmaker is for a challenger to successfully paint him or her as a "do-nothing" and thereby unseat them. This creates a frantic enthusiasm for lawmakers to knee-jerk to every possible situation and push out as many laws as possible to "solve" the problem (and of course keep all of their lawyer buddies employed and the system humming along as-is with progressively more and more power, imfluence and control pushed into the hands of cops, judges, the prison industry, the legal industry, etc.). This is all driven by incumbency and a lack of term limits. It's one of about a hundred problems I've brought up that would in some way be solved by simply shutting off the perpetual campaigning and obsession with reelection that dominates so much of politicians' time. It's probably THE single biggest change we can demand to our system that would affect the greatest net positive change in it.

If lawmakers spent as much time deciding what older laws could / should be stricken or updated as they did pumping out more to appear relevant / necessary (or fundraising, or campaigning, or being taken to $200-a-plate dinners by lobbyists) we'd be better off. Better still if politicians / lawmakers weren't so constantly preoccupied with reelection and therefore terrified about being painted as "do-nothing" by a challenger and thereby jeopardizing reelection chances and undermining the power of incumbency, we'd be FAR better off.

We could certainly benefit from a society with a lot smaller "law enforcement" and "legal services" industries - and yes, these are most definitely industries - big ones.

I made a generalized post pointing out a reality of our system in response to a suggestion by Rick. If that offends your delicate sensibilities there snowflake, too bad. FWIW and as I states if be all for fewer, better, more sensible and more vigorously enforced laws - just as seems to be the case in Singapore (see the OP).

If we're going to start caning visa-overstayers why not start with the illegals first. At least those overstaying their visas bothered to get them in the first place!

Singapore is overcrowded and too needlessly expensive for my liking. I've been through a few times and while it has some interesting aspects I've got no real interest in staying any longer than an airport connection through Changi takes.

Wouldn't it be easier to just not get so butt hurt or not always look for a reason to be offended? Better yet, other stuff is just a click away. Yeah, we need a wall for that.

I grew up in Singapore and, while it has changed a lot, if you can't find something to enjoy there... well, let's just say the problem might be with you, not Singapore...

or your dirty mags.

My parents visited there about 10 yeas ago, and seem to like the place a lot. But then again, they only stayed for 4 days. After that, there were much many tourist "stuff" to do because Singapore is so small. I like to see it someday.

What!? They don't give those people free healthcare, welfare, housing, and college? That's unethical.

Lived there for 2 years, I got cabin fever. Luckily, it's so central within SEA, just hop on a budget airline and fly 2 hours in any direction and you will have a great time. It's an extremely transient country, the AngMos ruined it.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend. Its just that there are much better cities nearby, as JW8 pointed out. I do like the airport, though.
