Buying Car Out of State

Okay so I found a car to buy that is across the country.

The seller says the title is clear with no leans. And I have cash.

How do we transfer the money and title so we both are protected?

You going to arrange shipping? If so, arrange a bank transfer to be done after the car is on the truck. The shipper places the title in the glove box.

Fly out there, meet the seller, give him the cash, he gives you the signed title, you go to the local DMV and get whatever you need to do to let them know the car is yours now. Or, if you have a trusted friend wherever the car is, you can have them handle this for you. You can also do wire transfers, but everything is better with a human-to-human interaction.

True. In my case it was a little difficult since the car was destined to go overseas...but there was complete trust between buyer & seller in my case.

In my overseas sale, the buyer's rep showed up at my Credit Union with $100 bills in a briefcase.

Seller found a car dealer that takes cars on consignment. He takes the car and title to them and signs a consignment agreement. The dealer then sells the car to me as any car dealer would. Sending me copies of the agreements and I do the bill of sale and transaction with the dealership. And can then arrange for transport.

The dealer charges $350 consignment fee which the seller is willing to split with me.

Find a repro hood ornament and glue it on to the briefcase

I was burned badly doing this same thing. If it's an expensive or special car, see it in person and inspect or get it inspected in your presence until you're satisfied.

I used an Escrow service when I bought my Lotus from update New York to Colorado. Basically you and the seller setup accounts via the service. You deposit the cash into the escrow and he/she gets notified the money is there. In my case I held it in escrow until the seller called me, texted pics of the car loaded on the shipping trailer with photos of the signed title documents, and I talked to the transport driver...then I released funds to him.

This is the one I used, it went very smoothly. On a $30K purchase the fee was about $200 IIRC.

Sounds like problem solved. What ya buying?

And I don't think I could take delivery on a car sight unseen. I'd have to go get it myself.

It's a Cayenne Turbo.

Purchase my last 3 cars thru the internets and did not touch them until they were unloaded off the transport in front of my house. No problems with any of them.

NFW. Seller found dealer? And how do you know it's not a scam?

Remember the PPI scam about a year ago? Both the seller and shop were fake.

Where's the car? You might find a trusted Pelicanite nearby.

That dealer thing sounds fishy. Why would anyone hassle with this nonsense for $350 ?

In my case it drug another party into the mix. The owner then tried to assign all responsibility for his mis-representation onto a broker (in this case, it would be the dealer) and the local PPI shop (who was in cooperation of the owner as well).

It may work out well for the OP again or it may not. It can go either way but gets pretty expensive when it goes poorly.

After discussing with a car dealer...

Dealer said get a signed bill of sale, copy of front and back of title, and copy of driver's license. That with proof of wire transfer stated in signed bill of sale from my bank is enough to take to court.

He never produced the bill of sale or copies of anything. Gave him the deadline of when my bank could do the wire transfer today. Made some excuse about his scanner not working and he was going to go get the copies made. 1 hour after the deadline passed he emailed me that he went to work to use that scanner and a coworker bought the car for $100 more than what we had agreed on and went to an ATM and gave him $500 as down payment. Said he was going to pay the balance Monday. Said he hoped I would forgive him and if the deal doesn't go thru Monday I would be the first one he calls.

Sent a reply saying we had verbally agreed on the sale AND that he had declined me sending a downpayment to hold the car on several occasions.

Sent two emails after asking if he was going to reply to that. Nothing.

Sent an email telling how my brother had a nice concours quality 57 T-Bird for sale for 3 years. He only got offers for $50K or less. Finally a couple of months ago a local Ford dealership owner offered him $65K and he verbally accepted. Before they could do anything official my brother was contacted by a collector asking if it was still for sale. Brother said he had promised it for $65. The collector immediately offered him $70. Brother told him is was already sold to someone else. The guy asked if he had signed anything or taken a downpayment. Brother truthfully said no. Collector made several more offers up to $85K. Brother still said it was already sold. Brother said his integrity and being a man of his word cost him $20,000.

Another hour later I sent an email telling him I was glad to have had the opportunity to talk with and meet a person of such high integrity that is a man of their word up to the amount of $100.

Thankfully my bank took back the signature loan I was planning to wire the money with until I got a title to use for collateral without any fees, interest, or charge.

If you are doing a real estate deal in Los Altos CA with Intero Real Estate, have them do all the paper work, then refuse to sign it, tell them they should forgive you, and if you consider buying something you would call them.

He doesn't care about your morality. The car is sold to a more convenient buyer. Let it go and move on.

Yep, just too much to expect any integrity whatsoever from people in today's society.
