Is it cheesy to clone old race cars ?

I've got this itch that I need to scratch. I would keep it street legal but do the the body with period correct livery, wheels, body work etc. . I plan on driving it . This will be a strictly low budget fun project.
What do you think ?

Done properly, not cheesy.

If cloning a race car is cheesy then every backdated Porsche would be cheesy.

What's cheesy to me is a clone that also has the all the race car stickers and numbers. A few stickers are OK, but the big number on the doors and hood is a bit much.

Aww man, the 8 balls with numbers would be an integral part of its livery. I would make it look 100% on the outside .
This project will be such low hanging fruit for me, I think I have to .

OK, FFR....you've posted about vintage racing and now this thread. Let us in....what cha thinking of building? And a cloned/tribute streetabe race car is fine if that's what ya want. Well unless it's a fully flaired winged 935 on a 912 Chassis with a vw bus motor in coca cola livery.

So what ya wanna build?

Is this a race car? It's got numbers on the side and a name painted on!

If so, then yes. Cheesy.

you should start a Porsche tribute thread.
Find a talented vinyl/art guy and recreate a car that appeals to you.
When you want something else just remove the vinyl.

I've done a few tribute cars and restored a few real race cars.
The artwork research and execution can be a lot of fun.

I think tribute better describes what I want to do , more than a clone ..
