New Harley Motor

The Harley world is abuzz... Seems the EPA recently disclosed they have signed off on a new motor from The Motor Company, in both 107" and 113" displacements. It apparently will not entirely replace the Twin Cam right away, but will be phased in over the next few years. They are calling it the "Milwaukee Eight", whatever that means. Both displacements are reportedly significantly more powerful than the current TC 103. H-D is rumored to be unveiling them this month in the 2017 models.

I wonder if the EPA approval was tied to the recent settlement?

Hopefully, it is a few miles ahead of the retarded Rushmore project .
It was just a name to make one feel good about buying a somewhat water cooled V twin.
AND- lots bought into it (the status quo crew ).
The Nazi EPA wants to rule with an iron fist.
Next, He who pays (bribes ) those at the top will get to make what they want.
What a situation to saddle the minuscule motorcycle populace with all the EPA BS

Harley-Davidson’s New Milwaukee-Eight Big Twin Engine | Cycle World

Rocker covers are kinda blah. But I'd be interested in riding one.

Why on earth would they return to a single camshaft? The resulting horribly splayed pushrods were legend on the Knuckle, Pan, Shovel, and Evo. Particularly the forward exhaust, which ran on the outboard lobe.

The Sportster configuration is the only one that had the cams truly right (as you know)

Yup. I would have expected the next big twin to once again double the number of cams, not halve them. Strange turn.

I don't imagine anyone will make aftermarket exhausts for them.

Hell, why not? I'm close, with four. Bob has one for every day of the month.

I have a big tourer in my '13 Road King, a vintage bike in my '76 Sporty, a sport bike in my '93 900 SS, and a dual sport in my '03 XR650L. I do think I need one more, some kind of sport touring bike. I ride with some buddies who have FJR's, either on my big Harley or on my Ducati. I have to ride the big bagger harder than it's meant to be ridden to keep up, but I can't ride the Duc long enough for the miles they like to put in. I'm thinking one of the Triumph Sprint ST's, or a BMW R bike, or a Multistrada - something along those lines. That would still leave me two days a week to drive my 911 and my Boxster...

Make sure you go give the big Triumph Rocket a romp.
Next - i thought i would pass this along-
I learned something last week just when i thought i knew everything.
Cars and driveways.....Being able to "note and identify" all dangerous situations is only 1/2 the equation.
Being a little too fast and deep in the turn when they pulled out in front of me was a "moment" .
Thankfully and luckily it all worked out...
The old Roadking is not an agile machine two up ..
Moral -no faster than situations allow for.

for variety, I think you need to do an inline four (either direction), or a flat twin!

Yup. An in-line triple is right up there as well. I really like my buddy's Triumph... But yes, with three V-twins, the sport tourer needs to be different. I like the simplicity of air-cooled. I like twins. I like German. The BMW is mighty appealing on those grounds.

Regarding the switch back to single cam eludes me as well. They must have addressed in some way the pushrod geometry issue with the new 4 valve setup. 1 thing some of you may not be aware of is the amount of noise an air cooled ( even partial) engine makes which contributes to the total amount of noise generated...............EPA has a limit on this. Now the exhaust note is the obvious major part of this but as the standards tighten manufactures have to be creative to address ALL the noise.

Reducing the number of moving parts also reduces noise, cost, money. The question is then is the new engine better all around as they say

8 valves ?.....does that mean twice the knocking ?

I hope it means better fuel economy, more power, less valvetrain noise, and a smoother ride.

Push rods? My 1930 Rudge Whitworth 500 cc single has push rods. AND a 4 valve head.
