Tundra or GMC Sierra

I need some input. My Expedition is showing its age. I use it for towing my ski boat and hauling friends around.
I like the 4x4 Tundra but it's overall fuel mileage is kind of a bummer. The Sierra looks good to me but I am not familiar with GM products.
Any input is appreciated.

Had a tundra for a couple of years.
Absolutely zero drama. Towed great, worked great.
Moved into it from an LR3 so the 14mpg I got was actually better than I was used to.

I'm getting used to Tundra #2, it's a 2016. My first Tundra was a 2003 and it was the best truck ever - perfect size, good mileage, stone reliable - but it had rust issues. Tundra #2 is bigger, boxier, worse visibility, but it has a bigger engine and gets about the same mileage. I'm still annoyed about the extra sheet metal and the stupid shifter console taking up the floor. With all it's flaws, a Tundra is a decent truck.

I'm not sure what the fuel mileage issue is, but my F-I-L had a 2013 (?) Silverado and complained that the real-world fuel mileage was no where near what GM estimated. He now drives a Tacoma... We tow our race car with a buddy's Tundra. It's awesome.

No experience with the Tundra. I had a 2000 Tacoma 4x2 xtra cab for years and it was a very reliable rig. I now have a 2014 Sierra 4x4 crew cab and its the nicest truck I've ever had the pleasure of owning or using. I've averaged over 18mpg over the 50k miles I've driven it - 5.3 liter direct injected small block V8. Does a good job towing my open car hauler and race cars when needed. It's the quietest, best riding vehicle I have, and had been dependable. When I'm ready for a new truck, I'll probably get another GMC.

I will tell you frankly that all new trucks are excellent. I bought a 2015 Tundra 4x4 TRD in 2014 but looked at and drove every 1/2 Ton on the market.

There was not a clunker in the bunch.

For me it came down to price. My neighborhoods best friend owns the local Toyota dealership and I have established a friendship with him as well. I got the friends and family deal.

I have owned the truck 22 months and have 43,000 miles on it.

I average 17.2 miles a gallon in mixed driving. My daily commute is 20 miles round trip so I'm good with it. When I travel for work mileage is paid for.

The performance is really quite something. It tows all the farm stuff perfectly, handles well and cruises like an F-22.

Good luck.

I've had a current gen Silverado since they came out in 2014 (basically the same as the Sierra). I have been very happy with the truck, it's been trouble free, and with the 6.2L gas engine it pulls very nicely (420HP). It gets a pretty solid 16-20MPG pretty much all the time. I would buy another FWIW.

I don't think you could go wrong with either. Drive both and buy what you like best.

I can't speak to the tundra but I did on a GMC Sierra 2500 for several years - really horrible piece of crap. I'll never own another pick up ever again. Terrible build quality, terrible mileage, terrible visibility plus a transmission that like to grenade itself (I went through three of them) etc.

What I learned from that experience was that I don't like pick up trucks at all and I like it GM products even less.

One of the positives with the Toyota is the access to the entire engine. Having a Ford and only being able to get to 2/3 of the engine. That is a huge positive for me.

two of my friends bought new trucks at the same time. one was a decked out Toyota Tundra. the fancy one with the black seats and red piping. super nice. he told me he gets 13mpg

the other guy got a Silverado. also super nice, interior is fancy. he told me he averages 17mpg, with hwy at 20.

both trucks are pretty awesome. i dont think you can go wrong.

I have had the opposite experience, Just turned 200k on my 6.0 gasser 2500 hd. Original engine , trans, and axles. I did have to rebuild the transfer case due to pump rub through. It uses no oil, makes no noises, and still pulls like a freight train . Parts are dirt cheap, and in stock at every parts store in the country . Super easy to work on, as easy as 70's vehicles .
This has been hands down , the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned . Im shooting for 300k .
It gets a whopping 14 mpg on the highway though, and 12 around town, but the power more than makes up for it.

owned a previous gen Tundra for 8 or 9 years. own a 1500 suburban since dec of this past year.

without a doubt the tundra is the better built no drama just get the job done vehicle.

not sure how this applies to the newer models.

Had a 2001 & 2004 Tundras loved them. time for a new truck in 2010 and got a deal on a 2011 Siearra. Hated it, fit & finish poor. Handled like a turtle (hecho in Mexico on the air cleaner always bothered me)Kept it 8 months and went back to the Tundra.Love it!

FWIW I think Chevy/GMC made some big strides in the current K2XX truck platforms over the prior generation.
