Need mattress recomendations
Our old king size pillow top mattress is shot. I see big name mattresses (Serta etc) for $1500 and "mattress factory" mattresses for $500 and everything in between.
What do you all like? Gel memory foam big name? inner spring big name? What brands do you like? I'm really at sea with this one and we need a mattress soon. |
We just went the on line route and bought a purple mattress. www.onpurple.com
Jury is still a bit out for me, my wife loves it. She's got some hip problems and is facing a replacement at some point. She has been dealing with a lot of pain and it is much better with the new bed. The big upside was not having to step foot in a retail mattress store. |
I'm happy with the sleep number air bed that came with my motorhome.
Was surprised to find that I found softer more comfortable. If I change my mind firm is just a button push away. Do have to remember to let air out if climbing mountains, but that's my problem. Cheers Richard |
There are multiple online sellers that have a 90 day (or more) free return policy. I would try one of those.

We bought a latex mattress at IKEA and love it. YMMV
|
We stayed in a fine hotel and loved the mattress so we took a picture of the label and went shopping. There are several **** hotel quality mattresses that are mass produced and offer a very good nights sleep for very reasonable $$. Ours is a Sealy Posturepedic Waterbrook Plush at around $600. We like it a lot.
|
A few close friends of mine have the Tuft & Needle mattress and they love it.
So, I pulled the trigger and bought one. Has a 100 night sleep-trial. If you don't like it, they return your money and arrange to have it picked up from your home. The mattress is then donated. I sleep much better now and really look forward to going to bed again. www.tn.com |

Do you guys get a mattress and box spring together? Or just the mattress?
|
My wife and I initially loved sleep# bed, also bought them for the kids. Then after about a year, we all complained about back pain.... much better since we went back to conventional mattresses.
|
Sealy Posturepedic pillow top.
we sent back/rejected two set-ups beforehand. one being a memory foam unit. |
|
Temperpedic here. I have chronic back pain after my back surgery in '94. I find my matteres very relaxing on the back.

Lucky for us there is a mattress store next door to Lowes. :D
We stopped in and looked around. She is sold on the Tempur-Pedic gel-top thing that stays cool all night. Temperature is a real problem for us, as she turns the room temp down to 65 and turns on the overhead fan and still gets night sweats. I'm on the other side of the bed huddled under a down comforter. It's very spendy - the retail guy said they are price controlled and will be the same price everywhere - $5600. On-line from Sealy they are $4299. We are still looking, but she is sold on the gel top. It gets good reviews and apparently really does stay cool all night. The price is crazy high though. |

While stationed in Germany we bought a bed there. Best bed I've slept in. It's a foam mattress and it uses curved wood slats for a "box spring" effect. it has 2 seperate mattresses, we each have our own comforter so I can have a thin one and the wife can have a heavier one, no more sweating at night for me.
|
We just went from a Queen coil to King Foam Gel top (Sealy). Love the increased size, now there is more room for the dog and cat. Really like the Foam and the Gel technology really does work with keeping the heat down around your body. The Tempur-pedic are nice but pricey. Remember you spend a third of your life in it, so get the one you want.

We recently replaced an old Serta pillow top with a Serta iComfort... which is Serta's answer to Temper-Pedic. It was about half the price but we couldn't tell a difference laying on it and the Temper in the store. We are about 6-8 months in and my wife loves it. I initially loved it but am finding that I am experiencing lower back pain that I never did before but I don't know if its the mattress causing it or the two small hounds that like to share the bed with us . Anyway, maybe worth a look because they are more economical.

The last time I shopped for a mattress at the local Sealy/Serta whatever store I told the smoking hot young saleslady that I was looking for something not too firm but yet not too soft. She suggested I try *this* one and I laid down on it for a minute. Little too firm. Ok, lets try *this* one. So I hop on the mattress and get comfortable. About that time she takes a similar position on the adjacent mattress and starts asking me questions on how it feels. I had to bite my tongue and refrain from saying something like "why don't you come over here so I can check the action". :D Instead she informed me it was something like $2800. I told her that wasn't in my budget.
So I bought one from the local "mattress outlet store" for about $600 and 6 years later it is still alright if you find the right spot. Its a Corsicana, made in Corsicana Texas. I understand they make a lot of RV type bedding. I got what I paid for. |
Beauty rest black beyond series

I'm still sleeping soundly on my California King sized full motion waterbed that i've had for 35 years now. We did change the $100 bed bladder, and a $50 heater, but don't see a need to buy a $2000 bed frame/mattress that we then need to replace every 10 years.
Oh, BTW, it is fully adjustable also (just add or subtract water,)and turn the dial for more heat. |
A good memory foam topper transform just about anything.

WTF? I'd look around, At $5K it better be giving me a hand job every night. I bought a 4"-$200 gel topper for my stock Coachman RV last month, at COSTCO, THAT was worth it. |
Doing some research I came across the Tuft&Needle mattress. It gets high marks for heat dissipation. $750 and if you don't like it after 30 days they'll give you your money back and send someone to pick it up.
|
For $5K at least get this one, I think she comes with it.

I always have a lie down in-store. I've had mattresses too soft before giving me a sore back/headache.
Edit: I'd like to have a lie down with her! |
Sleep Number (Select Comfort) mattress here, going strong 10 years in, I'm very happy with it. Doesn't collect dead skin and dead parasites (being plastic). Allows different firmness for wife and I.
|
For the price IKEA mattresses are pretty good.

I absolutely love my Aireloom. Most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on period.

There are a lot of new ones. I might pull the trigger on one of these.
TN Purple Casper Direct to consumer. Good return policy. Costco sells mattresses too, with a good return policy as well. |

I will second sleeping on a Aireloom, 5 yrs and counting, good as new.

just looked at a sleep # with reclining and stuff, $12k large???
|
I have a $2,400 coil spring mattress with a pillow top. I think it's fantastic, but I'm not picky about mattresses. I suspect any of the online free delivery foam mattresses would suit me. I did not choose mine, my ex did, but i like it.
What I did find was that my expensive box spring and mattress were very tall when stacked, and I had to make a new base for it. On my old bed frame it was simply too far off the ground. |
I just ordered the Tuft&Needle, $750 all in, no tax or shipping. It gets great reviews. If we don't like it after 30 days (they insist that you give it at least that long) I'll call them and they'll refund my money. Between the price and the return policy I don't see how I can lose even if we hate it. BTW I'm not getting rid of the old mattress until I know we like whatever new one we land on.
