How many cars would you own if garage space was not an issue?

Hypothetical here. Let's just say you had a magical garage that could store infinite cars.
You'd pick which car you wanted to drive from an app on your phone, and it would magically appear in the garage bay.
You could also see them all in one large lot, underground.

In other words, garage space is removed as a constraint.
Everything else remains the same (finances, maintenance, etc)

Would you increase the number of cars you own?
What other cars would you realistically add?

R K T 08-28-2016 04:04 PM

8-10 would be manageable, I think.

A private garage about a mile from where I live.....

I barely have enough time to get my 911 out on the road, can't imagine having more than a couple fun cars if space wasn't an issue, just because it would drive me crazy trying to make sure I drove them regularly- would be come a chore rather than enjoyment.

aschen 08-28-2016 04:26 PM

Prob 5 personally, I have 3 now personally and would love to have a $2000 miata track rat and some sort of component car to build with my son

dad911 08-28-2016 04:27 PM

Less than I have now.....can't keep up with maintenance as it is.

id10t 08-28-2016 04:32 PM

Unlimited garage space needs to go with unlimited funds to fill it... otherwise, the same 3 I own now, maybe a 4th in the near future (oldest is now a driver).

And since I never brag on my garage, '13 Nissan Versa, '12 Mazda CX-9, '65 356c coupe rusty and not running and needing 25k+ worth of work... one day.

That said, give me unlimited funds and I'll restore the 356, buy a second 356 to go outlaw, get a car for the oldest, maybe a pickup truck, maybe a RV or 5th wheel to tow with the pickup.

I'm sorta in the same boat, with my RX7, Boxster, and 911, in addition to the boring truck and minivan, I'm busy every weekend with maintenance, repairs, or detailing. One big reason I'm selling the RX7 is that I simply don't have time for them all. At the moment I think two toys is a good number. Now if I didn't have a day job, all bets are off.......

Porsche-O-Phile 08-28-2016 04:44 PM

Garage space isn't the limiting factor - either money or time is.

plexiform 08-28-2016 04:45 PM

keep my 1975 911s and 2016 lifted Chevy Silverado....

I'd like to add a 997 Carrera S to the stable. If space was not an issue, I'd keep the four motorcycles also.

This.

WPOZZZ 08-28-2016 04:57 PM

Throw in infinite $$$ to go with an infinite garage, I'd keep buying cars that I like that I can get at a good price. Back to reality, I park my cars at two houses. I have an apt bldg behind one of them and used to leave cars parked there, too. Three to five cars is the sweet spot.

Baz 08-28-2016 05:04 PM

Sorry to see I'm not the only one with not enough TIME for all the cars and stuff I have....keep thinking this is a good incentive to cut back and ease into a reduced work load....something that would yield a 4 day weekend! :)

RANDY P 08-28-2016 05:06 PM

Insurance, garage space, things start to rot since you don't drive enough, gas day sucks.

I had 5 drivers at my peak- never again.

sc_rufctr 08-28-2016 05:39 PM

Ideally three...

VR6 Golf for daily duties (driveway)
Porsche 911 SC for weekend/track day fun (garaged)
Wish list: Rolls-Royce Corniche (hard top coupe) for Winery, special occasion and country drives.

I have the first two and I'm looking for a suitable Corniche but I won't buy one until I have a house with space for 3 cars and some tools/workshop machinery.
My current house has room for two but I use one space for my workshop machinery and tools.

I've sold two of my 912 projects in the last year....still a cream puff 912, an old Alfa, the TR4, and the Ferrari, which I've driven probably less than 10 times this year. Plus 3 "daily drivers" that I try and rotate. Mix that with projects around the house and trying to maintain a semblance of a social life (along with commuting 140 miles a day for work) the truth is...I have too many cars.

The Ferrari is a double-edged sword. I love it, but in some ways it's become a high-priced baseball card. I don't thrash it like I used to...it's worth triple what I paid for it, and most likely will continue to go up. It's now a long term investment. Part of me wants to cull the fleet and limit myself to one really fun car...but each of them either fills a certain void or I have a certain attachment to it.

sc_rufctr 08-28-2016 05:46 PM

What model Ferrari do you own Mike?

rattlsnak 08-28-2016 05:56 PM

I have 5 now, but would love to have probably 2 more. My garage is busting at the seems. Definitely a space issue with me.

Charles Freeborn 08-28-2016 06:02 PM

I'd own 5. One work type vehicle (capable of towing 8k lbs), one road sedan, one vintage sports car, one modern sports car and one pure track something or another.

Same here - and I only have 9

bpu699 08-28-2016 06:23 PM

Our house had an 8 car garage... 4 fun cars and 4 daily drivers...

Here's what I figured out: any fun car past the first 2 never get driven. You almost have to force yourself to drive them so the gas doesn't go bad...

Usually 1 car becomes your favorite, 1 is always in pieces, and the other 2 just sit...

2 fun cars is plenty. Anything past that is just misguided money spent, because you could...

I hear you. I have 4 fun vehicles now and it's too much. I'm thinking of selling a 356 and getting one of the cars I owned back in the day - '53 Henry J, '48 Chrysler, or a swing axle VW.

Timely topic as I was cleaning one of my garages today:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bvgN86AGfXk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Answer:

If I keep a garage like this, I deserve NO NEW CARS!:D

Editor's note: The video specialist got smoked out and cut the video off before the dirt reached critical mass. As such, 38 seconds in is the best indication (This is the Garden Tractor garage btw!)

Seriously though- it boils down not only to storage, but upkeep and enjoyment. I need to change the oil in the 911. I need to clean the 911. I need to change the oil in the endeavor. I need to clean the volvo v60. I need to redo the front suspension (again) in my xc70. I need to track down a vacuum leak in the xc70. I need to pull the windshield and patch a rusting corner in the 911. The v60 is coming up on 30,000, which I means I need a transmission oil change, a read haldex oil change, if I want it to get to high miles. Oh, did I mention I need to redo some shingles on the roof of the house?

I am behind the ball with 4 cars bigtime!

LakeCleElum 08-28-2016 07:33 PM

I currently own 47 carburetors, 36 fuel injectors and 25 Batteries....I try to downsize. 1 step forward and two steps back.....The recent Riding mower Thread by Asphaltgambler cost me a 4th John Deere I picked up this week...

tabs 08-28-2016 08:04 PM

A 4 car garage would be enough. F150, 69 911S, would add 356SC Cab, and?

Bill Douglas 08-28-2016 08:59 PM

Well... I would still have my spare parts 911SC (it was a crashed 1982 SC bought at auction) if I had the space. I'd have it on those wheel it anywhere dollies and keep it covered in a dustcloth in a corner somewhere. And whenever I needed a part out it would come.

No more vehicles than the GF and I have already.

speeder 08-28-2016 09:01 PM

I've actually discussed this with a friend. I think I could keep it down to 10. But then again, maybe 20. There are a lot of cool machines to own.

wildthing 08-28-2016 09:24 PM

50. With an infinite garage space, I assume I don't work and just collect money from my investments and businesses.

That's my problem, so much cool stuff out there. Every time I simplify, something else tempts me.

rufrob 08-29-2016 02:54 AM

5 now but only 2 are plated. I plan to sell 2 and get a 996tt. But a high mileage 997tt is almost as cheap as a low mileage 996tt. Hmmmm. Or spend money on the 930 and 951 on a full body respray and supercharge and W210 E55.

WHEN I win the lottery, and niether time, nor money is an issue any longer, I would love to build a large climate controlled garage with a lift, checkerboard floors, a rest room, fully stocked with good tools, and all the stuff I need to play with my projects.

I would love to build a FFR Shelby Cobar replica, have space for my DD 2017 GT350 Mustang, and my other DD 2017 King Ranch F250. It would be kind of cool to have a 1963 Ford Thunderbolt drag car. I may also need room for my racecar hauler. As far as having a static collection of cars, I don't see the reason. Far too many guys in my area, only ever get thier classic muscle cars out of storage for 2-3 car shows a year, and never actually drive them more than a few miles a year.

Crowbob 08-29-2016 04:09 AM

2; summer and winter. The rest of the stalls would be filled by UTV's, motorbikes, tractors (and the necessary implements), campers and the absolute minimum tools of all types, like at least one of each that was ever made at any time in any country for any purpose.

Steve F 08-29-2016 04:13 AM

I'm down to 10, trying to quit:rolleyes:

I'd amend to include 2 fun cars max.

Sell and buy as required to scratch whatever itch.

JD159 08-29-2016 05:23 AM

I'd probably go full scale Leno

notfarnow 08-29-2016 05:33 AM

I've actually thought about this a lot

- Aircooled 911 - for summer fun
- 996 C4s - daily driver
- beater 4 door pickup truck - renos and bashing around
- project car on rotation - something fun and quirky

Good list. I have to have a pickup, a 911 for DD (with A/C) would be great. A cool beater, bmw sounds good and then a project car. I have a thing for little british cars so maybe a Mini, MGA... Project cars like an old FJ, a 20's/30's car... the list goes on.
