California's Water - Crisis?

I don't pretend to have studied the numbers. But my feeling, helped by a little reading, is that California is at a water crisis point.

As far as I know, there is no water rationing in any major California city, nor any major new restrictions on agricultural water use.

2014/15 didn't fix California's drought. It is quite possible the state will have another year of mild winters with little snowpack, and another, and another.

Do you Californians have your head in the sand? Or is there a reason that nothing is being done?

California has about one year of water left. Will you ration now? - LA Times

Actually, there are major restrictions on agricultural water use.

Federal allocations are at 0%.

There are zero restrictions on environmental water use. We are flushing millions of acre feet of water out to the ocean in the name of saving a fish.

When LA runs dry, there will be enough political pressure to change things.

I grew up in California and when we had our first drought, mid-70s, an old-timer neighbor said, "If you can just pour it out on the ground it's too cheap." He was referring to a neighbor washing a car with the hose lying on the driveway running while the guy washed the car.

Drive through the central valley and you can see water restrictions, miles of farms plowed under, but you have to save those smelt in the delta.
Plus, I believe EVERY city has some water ration program going.
The biggest DeSal plant in the US is coming on line late this year in Carlsbad and will generate water for 300,000 home in the North County.
Other cities have tried to get a DeSal plant but the Surfrider Foundation and other Greenie wackos shout them down.
The leftist politicians in Sacramento are no help.

The failure to construct the second bank of pumps at Bethany AND the failure to construct the cross delta conveyance, both environmental political decisions, are two of the biggest reasons. If these facilities, which are original to the SWP, were constructed a whole lot of environmental AND beneficial use issues would suddenly evaporate. Water is used for political power in our State.

^ + eleventy bazillion.

We have been trying for decades to build more water storage, to save water for drought years. But the greenie lobby has been able to stop efforts by the thinnest of Endanger Species threads. I predict that thread may snap this time.

East bay municipal water district just announced rate increases because people are cutting so far back on their water usage that they are not making ends meet.

Which is not needed had EBMUD used a properly structured rate.

Politicians- Huntington Beach has an opportunity to build a desalination plant, one of the ladies on the city council has been quoted in the paper asking why we need this, she's been assured there's plenty of water for the next twenty years. Two problems, one, she's blind, two, only twenty years?

The grass area could be reduced and the rest(borders) turned back native.

The fact EBMWD increased rates should have been considered a given. That is SOP for any similar charging structure. Cars get better mileage, drivers will be charged by miles driven. Solar starts becoming a big thing, power rates will be going up. All those are things that should be foreseen.

So what you're saying is that no matter how much we save/conserve the financial aspect has to remain the same. Use less, pay just as much (or more). The system must not be de-monetized. I guess that explains why oil is still low per/bbl. while price at the pump has rocketed back up over the past month. Save all you want to, you're still going to pay.

If they start rationing, what should the priorities be?
