Obese/Fat people & bold pilots...

When I was in the service, used to hear the saying:
"there are a lot of bold pilots...and a lot of old pilots. But not a lot of old-bold pilots"

Thinking of the morbidly obese, I can't say personally I have seen one make t past 75-80

I've seen a lot of skinny people die in that age range as well... IIRC average life expectancy is 73ish years...

I often tell people that you will never see a person that is both very old and very fat.

Thanks a lot...I turn 73 in November. Oh well, I'm kinda ready to go, considering the divisive state of this nation. I mean, the Porsche owners hating Mustang people.

Seriously, I lost a long time buddy not long ago. He was a total fitness guy. Light on the booze, bicyclist, jogger, vegetarian, did everything right. Heart attack, mid 60's. I think it was genetics that got him. His uncles and his father all died in their early 60's with heart problems.

So, do everything right, but remember to enjoy life. When your number is up, it's up.

When my wife was a Naval Nurse at Balboa (an enlisted Marine married to a Squid officer - yup, we pulled it off) she worked the Med-Surg ward for quite some time. It was pretty much the place they'd send retirees for whom intensive care wasn't an option, as there really wasn't anything that was going to save them anyway. So they'd stay until they either got "well" enough to go home (or somewhere else) to die or they'd just die on the ward.

Anyway, I learned something important during my many visits there: the terms "Little Old Man" and "Little Old Lady" exist for a reason. All of the WWI vets I met were thin old guys. Plenty of much younger guys there, too: fat guys from WWII, Korea and VN who were extremely ill as a result of their obesity. There's enough things in this world to kill me - being fat won't be one of them.

Plenty of old and obese. They are simply not out and about for that very reason.

Also, my friend Karl was a fitness machine. As in, triathlons for decades fit. 50 yo., newly married, toddler son. Late one night he went downstairs not feeling well and never came back up. Really shook me up as I thought the guy would live forever if anyone could.

RIP Karl.

I am sorry about the loss of your friend.

My 65 year old best lifetime pal was elated when he hit 60 because he could finally win his class once in a while in mountain bike racing. Well heeled for middle class. 15 good years left, right? Bladder cancer. He is still kicking with vigor about four days after chemo, but it is a frightening, bullet dodging and draining experience.

We are expendable.

I've seen lots of skinny friends die young.
I've seen people live way too long also, to the point where the quality of life is nearly completely gone (grandmother, 102 years old).
i DO NOT want to live to be really old. No friggin way.

I think I'll have fun, die at a reasonable age, and have even more fun in the next life.

Weight is not a definitive indicator of fitness. There are lots over weight that can outrun me ( (although I don't think any who are morbidly obese)

Likewise lots of skinny people who can't climb stairs

Morbidly obese is such an odd term. Not saying it ain't correct.

My boss was 475, I was 230. I was three inches taller than him at 6.0' and jogged three miles a day. Both morbidly obese according to the charts. He's dead...........and was my age.

Skinniest ever was after college. 184. For about two weeks.

I just think of it this way. If you are overweight then the heart has to work harder to pump the blood through a greater network of arteries and veins. However if you have a history of heart disease then that can be a problem. I have met skinny guys that have had multiple heart attacks.

Congenital heart issue are congenital heart issues. Skinny or fat, you can't change that. That aside, being over weight also leads to type 2 diabetes, circulation issues, sleep apnea, etc, etc. If you gathered 100 people over the age of 80, very few of them would be more the 25 or 30 pounds over the ideal BMI recommendations. That's just a simple fact.

Of course there are exceptions for genetically muscular and athletic individuals, but those lucky few are few and far between. Those who've put on 30 plus pounds of mucsle weight through weight lifting and steriods are showing up with a whole different set of life shortening health issues.

I agree BMI standards are light, but people who are overweight know when they're overweight, and its highly likely to shorten thier life. Its a medical fact well substantiated.

When I was care-taking an elderly couple in Portland, back in 2010, the wife died in front of me from a cardiac arrest.
She was 4 lbs. shy of 600, according to the hospital. Age 60.
I learned a great deal from that time...a wonderful and beautiful woman.
I have a different view of obesity now. It's mostly psychological.
I find myself not passing judgement much any more.
I used to rake fat people over the coals, in my mind.
