ebay discloses personal info
A mini-rant, or a PSA...
Earlier today, I saw a vehicle on ebay motors with a "make offer" button. I put in a lowball price. I expected to get a message back through the ebay system that said the offer was unacceptable. Instead, about 20 minutes after putting in the offer, I received a phone call from the seller. He asked for me by name, and asked if I had put in an offer on a vehicle. I said 'yes' and asked him how he got my personal contact info. He said, "ebay sends the info to me because I am the seller". He then gave me "what for" regarding the lowball offer. So, I got on the phone to ebay. They deny giving him the info. I asked for a supervisor. The supervisor told me that info is only exchanged after a sale. Well, there was no sale. Try again. He transferred me to another supervisor who could "better assist" me. Supervisor #2 told me that I would have received a message through ebay asking permission to disclose the info to the seller. Nope... that didn't happen either. From there we just kept going in circles until I gave up and said something about his mother and field animals. Here's the thing... my ebay user name is not my name. Not even close. And the phone number on my ebay account is a private backline in my office. The only calls coming to that are wrong numbers, or people I have personally given the number to. It would not be something that a car dealership in another state would have. So just know that your ebay registration information is absolutely up for grabs. No matter what the ebay policies state, or what their minions say.

Yep, same thing has happened to me. I've also had my eBay-only email address added to a few different dealer "newsletters" (without consent) after simply placing bids on their auctions.
There is definitely some shady dealings going on there... |

Me too, my personal information is dealt with on the internet? Oh gosh, this is news!
 Everything restriction related to the digital media is weakened step by step, and nobody speaks up. To be honest, as far as nobody stands up and many people start complaining about the way the digital world is heading this will only get worse, day by day. I see that here, they are about to install free WLAN for everyone all over the country, and everybody is going "Yay", "Way to go", "This is good for the industry" How about parents dealing with schoolkids? Do you think the schoolkids will come home directly afters school doing homework, coming home to a home with restricted access to the WLAN so that they can concentrate on school? Nooooo, they will hang out around the next WLAN hot spot for hours. I will charge the authorities for that extra school year my son will be doing if this happens. Todays kids will pay a high price for this stupidity in 15-20 years.  /Rant over |

Yep... ebay has already sent me an email this morning letting me know that it was spelled out in their privacy policy:
When transacting with another user, the other user may request and we may provide him/her with information about you necessary to complete the transaction, such as your name, account ID, email address, contact details, shipping and billing address, or other information from you needed to promote the reliability and security of the transaction. I guess it's time for me to put fake info into my ebay account registration.

Screw ebay. For vehicle interest or transactions, use creative contact seller methods thru their annoying message system. From there, take the entire process offline and everyone wins, saves a good chunk of coin. Often thousand$$.
On a side note, I also avoid using the paypal monopoly. Contact seller prior to bid or b.i.n. whether they accept payment by 'old school' method. PP and ebay try their best to block such transactions but legally, they have no right.

Agreed.
Today I changed all of my contact info. I'm sure it's against the terms of service, but they'll have to take that up with some guy named Wayne Dempsey from now on.
