I have one as nice in 38/55 with a heavy barrel. Oh yeah that configuration was the predecessor to the Schutzen rifle, built in the late 1880's.

This one had paperwork on some work done at the model 21 shop years ago. It also has a very nice fitted case.
My dad bought this gun around 40 years ago and paid a pretty high price at the time. As far as I know he never shot it, just thought it was nice. I thought that it was a schutzen, that's what dad called it. There were a couple of other high grade target rifles that my uncle had bought at the same time, he sold those to someone in the Coor's family. They were not Winchesters, don't remember the brand, but were engraved and very high quality.

I have a box of 22 100 Remington shorts from when I had a SA-22 in short only ... make it up to the Gainesville area and let me know, we can meet up. Not worth shipping though...

Are those Unertl scope blocks I see on top of the barrel? If so I would grab one and put a 6x or 8x on it for use in the Schuetzen Any Sights 22 caliber matches. They started those because all the old shooters in those matches have bad eyesight and it helps some. Only another 700 or 900 dollars!

Winchester High Walls. These are the "thin side" variety; there is also a "thick side" on which the sides of the action are flush all the way across from the front to the back, rather than thinned out, or rebated like these.
Here is a Marlin Ballard from the same era. Originally a .40-63, rebored and chambered to .45-70 sometime in the 1940's in Oroville, WA:

Also known as a Winchester Highwall. Somewhat unusual chambered in .22 short. More of the .22s were the Lowwall model which had the hammer more exposed. Actions worked the same way. Nice hunk of tree trunk on this one!
