Sonoluminesence

Sonoluminescence experiment: sound into light

Now this is pretty cool.

Quote:
Imagine you take a vial of liquid and run sound waves through it intense enough to create a bubble, a process called cavitation. Since the newly formed bubble is a very low-pressure area in the middle of the higher pressure of the liquid, it will quickly collapse. As the bubble bursts, crazy, inexplicable stuff happens. First, the interior of the bubble gets insanely hot. Laboratories have measured the center of the bubble at thousands of degrees, with recorded temperatures going as high as 20,000° Celsius. (To compare, the surface of the sun is only 6,000 degrees Celsius.) At the same time, you can detect a flash of light in the center of the bubble—usually bluish in color—lasting for just a few trillionths of a second. This flash of heat and light is sonoluminesence.

Wait. Vibrations contain energy ? Must be some pretty intense vibrations.

I didn't read the article, it may have mentioned this, but one of the fastest moving animals in the world uses this to stun it's prey. It's a shrimp that has a club, but they think the bubble and consequent shockwave that really does the work more than the club itself.

Vibrations can be viewed as a language and if you go to school long enough you can learn to understand that language and the vibrations will tell you a story!*

Typical capitation signature from a centrifugal pump suction.
Note the elevated floor on the spectrum and random non-repetitive waveform:

Mantis shrimp....affectionately referred to as "thumb splitters" in the reef-aquarium hobby

Quote:
Because they strike so rapidly, they generate air bubbles between the appendage and the striking surface-known as cavitation bubbles.[9] The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produces measurable forces on their prey in addition to the instantaneous forces of 1,500 newtons that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface, which means that the prey is hit twice by a single strike; first by the claw and then by the collapsing cavitation bubbles that immediately follow.
