Supposed to be good for the brain and attitude among other things. I tried the sardines with garlic and oil/butter over pasta that was suggested above. It was very good. I have not tried a stargazy pie, and not really that curious either. ;^)

No 'chovies, No 'dines! But growing up in jersey all we ever got were the nasty canned ones or the ones they put on pizza. When I started dating a Jewish girl she introduced me to Lox, now that I liked.

In a mustard sauce, on a saltine, with diced red onion or shallots. If I could get fresh ones, I'd grill them like they go in Italy or Spain. JR

My grandfather liked sardines with spicy mustard and red onion on Italian bread. I remember drag-netting shiners as a kid, bringing them to my mom who floured and fried them live on the spot. They were fantastic. Great times at Hammonasset Beach. Shiners, crabs, eels, dogfish.

Here's another plate of fresh sardines in Italy prepared a few different ways. I've had fresh sardines at nice restaurants in the US and they're almost inedible compared to what you get in Europe.

We go through a tremendous amount of canned seafood at my house. Here's a quick pic of the stuff we have on a shelf in the basement, and doesn't even include what's in the kitchen pantry. Kippers, sardines, and smoked oysters are at the top of our list.

King Oscar double layer sardines were my favorite, but I have a new favorite. We don't always eat a whole can, so it's nice to be able to reseal the jar, plus they are nice and small which is my preference and they have a very nice smokey flavor.

You can get them on Amazon, but we get them at a grocery store chain called HEB.
