Sad State for Those Looking for Work...

I am do not believe that there are only a limited amount of jobs but rather a very poor offering of those looking for jobs. I have been looking for an inside sales / customer service representative for a few weeks now. I have poured through hundreds of 'screened' resumes. When I say 'screened', these are the ones that our HR department has weeded out. I've seen some they didn't weed out and I truly cannot believe the employee pool in our country! Here is an example of the statement one individual used in the objective section of the resume:

Quote:
I'm very focused individual seeking a position with a company that allow me to fully use my skills and training that'llopen me up to diffrent and new challneges.
I did not change a word of this. The person had a last name that did not suggest that English was a second langue. They indicated that they held other jobs that would indicate a 4th grade mastery of English or so I would hope. The resume went on with sporadic offerings of lucidity which suggested that they could cut and paste from another document.

I won't post all the examples of ridiculousness. There is a certain level of the population that are unemployable. I am beside myself. I am wasting so much time pouring through countless resumes of people who are just plain scary!

What to do?

Open in word.
If anything that's not in the name or address field is underlined red discard.
That'll cut the chaff.

What kind of jobs are you hiring for? I can hunt you up at least one and maybe 3 or 4 entry level (fresh from AS, AA, or BAS) applicants for IT work (cisco networking, windows/linux sys admin, java/web/c++ programming), graphic design, and maybe business/management... students of mine and one or two others where we as instructors have come to independent consensus and said "gee, wish we had some way for him/her to work here....". We've sent students on to work at google, ibm, and form very nice consulting businesses after coming through our degree track and working for a year or so (to get past HR droids that can barely screen on time of experience in field). Shoot me a PM if you need someone like that.

Even if you don't PM me send your hiring folk (NOT hr folk, but like department head/manager/shift managers) to your local community college type place and talk with the program heads there in the various fields you need. I know my department (I teach as adjunct for ITE at "the other college in gainesville") has an advisory board of basically any employer with more than a handful of workers who has some vested interest in quality IT folk, and we adjust our curriculum to match - I'm sure your local CC does as well, so see if you/ your company can give some input. Get to know the instructors - especially any "lead" instructor - and ask them to mention your needs to their well qualified students.

If you need BS, masters or phd type folks, the same thing works for universities, at least on getting to know the significant instructors and asking them to pass info on to their stellar students...

But do you have the sharpener?

Peeps want work done on their car. "How do you spell your last name, Bob?"

"Just like the cold capsules but without the C's. Just K's. Contac vs Kontak. Real simple."

Koncac and Conti were on the checks.

I am baffled by the resume submission.

I never let HR screen resumes.

Always told them I want every single one.

It's a pain in the ass but if you want to make good hires it starts and stops with you.

Very recent conversation with a long time friend and nursery owner on the labor situation....

He says: "Would you rather have poor help or no help?"

100000 plus out of work here, thousands lining up for a hundred jobx, my wife's been out of work a while and had a few interviews. The biggest challenges are hundreds of resumes, and the companies are expecting to pay pennies.

Worst I have ever seen it....
