In Charleston and staying at home. Our place survived Hugo and Gracie without any trouble. No flooding in the neighborhood because we're in a high area next to the Ashley River. House is made of brick, no tall trees within 100' or more and not in the flood plain.

I've been following this since late last week and keep a 3 week rotating stock of food and water. Gassed up on Monday and four cars are hiding in the garage until everything passes. We're ready except for covering windows.

Just my opinion, but I think evacuating makes things worse most of the time.

Except for a power outage or your roof blowing off seems like you are much better off at home during a storm.

The power outage problem is solved with a generator. Or you could evacuate "after' the storm and return when they get the power back on. :D

If your roof flies off you're pretty much screwed no matter if you stay or leave. But how many roofs fly off (except that one time when Andrew hit S. FL...)

Those shelters place you in with a bunch of other refugees...you have no control over who you have to "mingle" with.

Most don't let you bring pets.

You have to fill out a bunch of paper work with personal info that goes who knows where afterwards....

Usually they don't allow alcoholic drinks or ammo...what fun is that? :D

We just returned from our local supermarket. No big deal really only a few more people than usual. Water was almost sold out. Why to people that are on city water buy bottled water before a storm? How about filling every container you have with tap water? :rolleyes: If you live in the country and are on a well, I can understand it.

And how often is the weather guy right?

why stock up on water... When hugo hit my house (which is 3 to 4 hours inland) we didn't have power for 2.5 weeks and we were told to boil water almost during that entire time.... and yes we were on city water

Not sure what will happen on Amelia Island and my place is 2 blocks from the beach so I opted to to leave. Still staying with my fiance in Jax though.

My folk are in Delray/Highland Beach, direct oceanfront in condo. Predicted 3-5' surge and 10-12" of rain. They are leaving their 996 behind in the ground level parking garage and headed to a hotel inland tomorrow. They rode out Katrina and Wilma but they are being safe and evacuating this time. The last few hurricanes after the power outage/no water in condo, they filled buckets of pool water to fill and use toilets in their condo for days (or weeks?).

4-5 days out are not as good

surge depends on the topography of the location
and the angle of the hurricane approach
then add the wave height to the surge if on a barrier island
if the eye wall hits or is very near tornado's are a big problem

From what I'm hearing I-10 going west out of Jax is already crawling along at 10 mph. I can just image what I-4 from Daytona to Orlando is like. One of the problems with the roads in Florida is there is not the capacity on the westbound roads. Trying to go west from I-95 is a problem, there are only a few major 4 lane roads a few 2 lane roads. If you are in south Florida and want to head out now you're probably too late.

To do it right they really should have cruise ships all set up to take everyone out to sea. No problem with traffic jams - you can sail wherever the storm is not....and return when the coast is clear.

Baz they're showing 140 mph winds at Daytona tonight now. Be careful man.

I have been through five Cat 2 Hurricanes, one near Cat 3, which spooked me: Waves were breaking in my back yard.

Cat 4 is a big, big deal. Be so careful folks.

My oldest and his family (two kids, 14 and 11) are heading up from Charleston this evening... along with their fish and an albino corn snake. Should be fun... haven't seen them in months. Our dog will love the extra attention they give him. :)
