I'm getting a new PC.....!

Dell Inspiron 3650 desktop with Windows 7 and some freebies incl. MS Office

Only $499 plus tax w/free shipping

Current Dell Vostro 200 (w/ W. Vista) is going on 9 years old so I got my money's worth.

We had a rain storm last Tues. and a couple lightning strikes close by w/brief outages and next thing I know I can't pull up my browser (Firefox) so I said this is a sign from above!

I'm using my Toshiba lap top right now but not as easy to use for me as a desktop so looking forward to my new PC which should arrive by Wed......

Check out some alternative brands: Asus, Lenovo, etc. I recently switched from a Compaq Presario Q model to an Asus ROG laptop. Core I7, 960m video... I use it for "work" and games.

Link: ASUS ROG G501VW-BSI7N25 I picked it up for $799 delivered.

No doubt, one could spend considerable time shopping around and tweaking options. For me it was a no brainer to go back to Dell with an quick and easy purchase for what will suffice for my meager needs.

That's great Baz. Dell makes some heavy-duty laptops. I am using the same Lattitude 6500 series at work. While hefty it has survived many airport excursions: 7 countries and close to 100 flights/security checkpoints.

Just be sure to use a Solid State Drive as your primary (good one) and upgrade the memory. I use mine for development and office tasks (Visual Studio, Android Studio, Photoshop, etc).

I always buy dell as a "small business" - slightly better hardware, better warranty (next day on site parts replacement) and US based phone support.

I checked out the Dell website.

That annoying "chat/phone" pop-up kept poking me in the ribs with a stick.
It blocked part of the screen.
It was unpleasant.
I didn't wish to stay and look at any more Dell products on their website any further. I left.

Very Smart to Get Win 7 Baz........I did the same thing for a Dell desktop soon after I put Win 10 on an old laptop I don't use anymore......Now I use that laptop even less.

I just put a new HD in my 10 year old Dell 380 along with Win 10. Sooo many problems. Edge sux too. So I wiped the sucker and rebuilt it...we'll see.

Well......as Coach Corso always says.......

My Dell arrived today and guess what I found when I opened the box......A CD with Windows 10 Pro on it.

The Dell I ordered specifically was advertised as having W7 as the OS....

So before I did anything else I called Dell and after an hour and 4 conversations with 4 different persons, it was confirmed my unit was shipped with W10 and I made the decision to return it for a full refund and they emailed me a pre-paid UPS shipping label.

Now to back track a bit...over the weekend I figured out a way to fix the problem I had on my old system so it's working like a champ again...with Windows Vista even!

Funny how things work out.

Not real happy with the Dell screw up but since my old PC is back working, I have plenty of time to shop for a replacement, even if it doesn't happen until next year.

They did say I could use the new Dell and still return it within' 30 days for full refund if I was not happy but when go through all the trouble if the OS is not what I want?

...and I thought I was stuck in the past with my early 2008 Mac Pro!

Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows 7. Switching an operational computer over to 10 can be problematic, but dropping it into a new computer that came with 7 is straightforward.

It only superficially resembles The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's so much easier when you have been assimilated...

I only use my computer at home as a home computer for keeping records, internet, etc. It's a few years old - don't remember exactly the age. I don't like Windows 10, and more than that I resent how Microsoft bombarded me to update from Win 7. My next computer will be an Apple. Don't know exactly which one, but I started out with Apple computers when I was in education and I'm going to go back.

That is good news Baz.
We used that site way back when our kids needed computers. Found two desktops configured pretty closely to the same way for them. When they started college it was time for laptops. I still have the one my son found on the site. 'Course the battery is dead so I've taken out the hard drive and use it as a backup drive now. I inherited it when he got himself a new one. For some reason I just can't bring myself to get rid of the dang thing, even though it's a tank.
Glad to hear you got your old machine running again. I kind of miss my Vista machine.

I've purchased a couple of Dells over the years, one or two for myself and several for family. I usually get them from the Dell Outlet which is returns and scratch and dent stuff. It's on their website. I don't have one now, but they have always worked well for me.

That's too bad about your new computer, but at least you figured out your old one's issue.

My next PC will 99.99% be an iMac. I currently have an HP "all in one" which is a Windows 7 touchscreen version of an iMac. It runs great. I am just waiting for it to die to justify spending the money for an Apple. I suspect I'm going to be waiting for another year or two.

we went imac for the home computer. some things are not as intuitive as they should be (photos is a PITA) but overall it suits our uses perfectly.

can't use a mac for work since quickbooks on mac is horrible.

It's a game of chess.
The consumer seems to be the enemy now.
You might not even be able to purchase a complete matching computer hardware system, and switch to Linux.
All that new hardware you just bought has a kill switch built in.

Microsoft tightens Windows 10's Secure Boot screws: Where does that leave Linux? | PCWorld
If that happens, you’ll only be able to boot Microsoft-approved operating systems on these locked-down PCs.

Can we say "vertical trust" anyone?

My 2008 Max Pro has served me well. But it is time to replace it. My hope is that Apple comes out with a new iMac this fall. The current iMac is all I really need but I want to get the latest generation when it comes out. It will last longer before I feel the urge to replace it.

I will agree here , I was totally surprised how non intuitive the Mac OS was given almost everything else from that company is . Irony right there
