Thanks Tobra - we made it back in one piece. It was a ridiculous day. Should have been 8 hours or so and we managed to make it into 12 hours... Our son got in a minor wreck with our 99 GMC - fixable but nearly 2K in parts. Too nice to scrap the drivetrain especially after spending over 3K on the transmission a year ago. found a 99 Chevy down in Eureka CA with a bad engine. Obviously our "regular" truck is down and we were using an 89 Chevy with plenty of miles on it. We've only had this a few weeks but it seemed pretty trustworthy. So with a borrowed trailer, a bag of tools, and a gallon of anti-freeze - off we went. You see...I had to put a gallon into the truck about a week ago. Hmm...
Rained hard and somewhat windy with a few REALLY strong gusts as we got right near the coast. Bought the "replacement" truck and loaded it on the trailer in the POURING rain. Seriously - I've been drier while scuba diving.
My turn to drive. Not liking the brake adjustment on the trailer. Not at all. In fact, there are NO brakes on the trailer. First stop from speed was pretty damned dodgy with a pickup on the trailer, in the rain, and the motive-power pickup having no ABS. It would have been a crash if I hadn't given it a ridiculous amount of extra room plus did every thing but sacrifice a goat to keep it inline and get stopped.. Stopped and replaced the trailer controller. Still no joy. At this point I do not want to drive so Steve takes over VERY carefully. A few miles later, he pulls over and works on it some more, finds the inline fuses are corroded and BINGO now we have brakes. Well...kinda. They are ONLY on the left side of the trailer, the right side has none. Wires are good, probably magnets or something at issue.
Big hill on 101 and the temperature RAMPS up hard. Slow down, throw on the heater pull over at the top. Add the gallon of anti-freeze I brought and note that the dipstick has a nice steady exhale of steam. Well crap. However, the temp drops and off we go. Took it real easy and just got home. Obviously we'll need to sort this out on the old 89 as we could never in good conscience sell it knowing it will overheat under load.
All the local streams/rivers are coming up quickly. There are waterfalls all along 199 that were not there when we came across in the morning. There WILL be rockfalls and slides guaranteed.
Glad to be home safe. I was seriously concerned that a slide or tree-fall would close the highway and we would have to double back. In spite of a good soaking, I would have to say that this was no where near as bad as we had been led to believe.
