I read the comments on that article and it is being slammed as complete nonsense. One meteorologist slammed it as "outrageous hyperbole." Gotta love clickbait.

Would love the hear a report from south of the olympics on the coast.
Ocean Bch, pacific Bch. Area on south.

Moclips just north of Pacific Bch is where the place I was interested in is located.

They may be feelin the full brunt of the weather over that way.

It is interesting hearing actual reports from the area to compare to the forecast.

The weather folks seems to be in CYA mode in forecasting the worst possible, just so they don't get blamed for missing something that does get serious.

Cheers Richard

Portland area at 3:48 pm is breezy. One or two good gusts. Some folks lost power but no big deal so far where I am.

I used to fly in there with far worse winds than that just from "plain old" run-of-the-mill winter storms! It does get funky getting in there - Newport too.

Angela and Steve, be careful, even if you are South of the worst of it.

Thanks Tobra - we made it back in one piece. It was a ridiculous day. Should have been 8 hours or so and we managed to make it into 12 hours... Our son got in a minor wreck with our 99 GMC - fixable but nearly 2K in parts. Too nice to scrap the drivetrain especially after spending over 3K on the transmission a year ago. found a 99 Chevy down in Eureka CA with a bad engine. Obviously our "regular" truck is down and we were using an 89 Chevy with plenty of miles on it. We've only had this a few weeks but it seemed pretty trustworthy. So with a borrowed trailer, a bag of tools, and a gallon of anti-freeze - off we went. You see...I had to put a gallon into the truck about a week ago. Hmm...

Rained hard and somewhat windy with a few REALLY strong gusts as we got right near the coast. Bought the "replacement" truck and loaded it on the trailer in the POURING rain. Seriously - I've been drier while scuba diving.

My turn to drive. Not liking the brake adjustment on the trailer. Not at all. In fact, there are NO brakes on the trailer. First stop from speed was pretty damned dodgy with a pickup on the trailer, in the rain, and the motive-power pickup having no ABS. It would have been a crash if I hadn't given it a ridiculous amount of extra room plus did every thing but sacrifice a goat to keep it inline and get stopped.. Stopped and replaced the trailer controller. Still no joy. At this point I do not want to drive so Steve takes over VERY carefully. A few miles later, he pulls over and works on it some more, finds the inline fuses are corroded and BINGO now we have brakes. Well...kinda. They are ONLY on the left side of the trailer, the right side has none. Wires are good, probably magnets or something at issue.

Big hill on 101 and the temperature RAMPS up hard. Slow down, throw on the heater pull over at the top. Add the gallon of anti-freeze I brought and note that the dipstick has a nice steady exhale of steam. Well crap. However, the temp drops and off we go. Took it real easy and just got home. Obviously we'll need to sort this out on the old 89 as we could never in good conscience sell it knowing it will overheat under load.

All the local streams/rivers are coming up quickly. There are waterfalls all along 199 that were not there when we came across in the morning. There WILL be rockfalls and slides guaranteed.

Glad to be home safe. I was seriously concerned that a slide or tree-fall would close the highway and we would have to double back. In spite of a good soaking, I would have to say that this was no where near as bad as we had been led to believe.

Here in mid valley it was pretty much a bust...like a normal sou'wester. I am very grateful for that.

For those curious why Columbus day '62 was mentioned...

Same here. There are quite a few Douglas firs on my property over 100 feet tall. They are gently swaying in the breeze. Sort of. Barely.

Me three. Pretty sure I could light a bic out there and this is supposed to be the worst of it. I live about 700 yards from Puget Sound fwiw.

Glad all of y'all fared well...ice storm two years ago took all the weaklings then. I still had a few 15" Carolina Pines snap in last weeks 40 mph winds...but I was on the fringe and spared too :).

They really got hammered east of me and the hurricane wasn't even close really.

Friday rain was very heavy in Portland. Saturday was nothing too much, windy but not remarkable.

Tobra 10-16-2016 06:53 AM

Brakes only on left side of the trailer, yikes. Glad to hear you did not get a chance to torture test your seatbelts. With the rain and wind, surprised no Douglas Firs decided to lay down in the road.

I am taking a camera with me to walk the dog today, was pretty windy here last night too.

The big storm was a non-event....just a moderate spring storm around here.

LakeCleElum 10-16-2016 07:35 AM

Thanks for the write up Angela....That would be quite an adventure even in good weather. Glad it worked out.
