Yes, fat people should pay more to fly

Row as airline weighs passengers to American Samoa - BBC News

I realize the above article is not implying that the Samoans were asked to pay a higher fare than others.

I fly low-cost airlines from time to time and find myself doing ridiculous things to "hide" 5kg or so of weight from the scales to meet the max allowable carry-on weight for my roller bag, like wearing my jacket when its 95 degrees and stuffing all my electronics in the pockets. I weigh 170lbs. My wife weighs 100lbs. We've had to do this routine a bunch of times.

You really have to feel for Hawaiian Airlines when they're forced to fly 400lb lardasses back and forth to Samoa every day. God forbid being stuck next to one of them.

I was on a flight recently where the guy's thighs were spilling under the arm rest and a good 4" into my seat. That was really nice.

Maybe this is a first step. I can only hope

yeah I've been on flights where the fat person next to me wanted me to lift the divider so he could be more comfortable, not a chance. buy two seats next time, or first class to park that weight.

I completely agree 100%.

I fly a lot, and like Dean, no way in hell is that arm rest coming up.

450 lb lady was sitting to my right. Had my 2 year old kid on the floor in the bulkhead window seat, coach.

I did not have room to use my right arm to eat.

Ever notice how tall they seem when shoehorned into the seat next to you?

I'm all for charging by the pound.

I'm alright with fat people.

It's the kid kicking the back of my seat that winds me up

I like that idea...charge by the pound. Makes good sense for a lot of reasons.

Hell yes weigh those Samoans.

One of the most annoying things about airlines these days is the extra cost for "premium" seats, typically aisle and other desired seats in coach.

It annoys me when we travel with the kids because you are forced to pay extra just so you can sit with them.

So if they can charge a premium for aisle seats in coach they can toss in a couple of rows of wider seats to accommodate the heavier traveller who probably would spend something extra for a bit more comfort for themselves.

Maybe it's the obese population contributed to Soup Plantation shutting stores?

With all my miles by commercial air I have shared my space with large folks more than I care to remember. Yes charge more for special circumstances like this.

Even if the airline offered extra large seats would extra large people shell out the $$$ for those seats?
I would also have to say there are probably three to four times as many obese pasty white folks compared to Samoans out there (I can say that because I'm a wedo).

I think so. Certainly not all but anything is better than nothing.

Depends on how you price it.

A percent increase over the standard seat is going to be an easier sell than getting someone to but two seats.

Market it as a comfort option.

I've had to do last minute runs back east and by far the cheapest way to do a one day in advance flight is Spirit.

I'm not a big guy, 5'8" and a 160.

I fit just fine in Spirits standard seat but I'll pony up the extra $40 for the larger cushier seat.

I firmly believe that part of an airline reservation should be entering your height and weight. As somebody that travels frequently, sorry if you don't fit in a standard seat you should have to buy two.

Gotta agree. How can an airline justify charging me $$ for having a suitcase overweight by 5lbs or $25/checked bag when the guy beside me has an extra 100lbs on each butt cheek, and half of one is in my seat!

#noseatspillover

I have been fortunate to avoid 4XL passengers most of the time. One time my wife sat next to a 2XL who very politely asked if she would lift the armrest so he could be more comfy. NFW!!!
"Comfy" is up in first class. Giving up 1/3 of your seat so 2XL can be comfy back in steerage ain't happening.
