It's like humans. Once you get to 60, you're more likely to live to 80.
At that mileage you know IMS/RMS wasn't an issue for the PO. Of course it doesn't hurt to change it for peace of mind. |

Nice job! IMO you might have tried to get the jalopnik crowd on your side at the end instead of making fun of them, but no big whoop.

How is the car? Are you happy with it?
Don't be afraid to tell the rough price...

Well done, I saw your first article. Interested to see how this turns out longer term. I spent a lot of seat time in my 2004 C4S over the weekend. We threw the winter tires on and put over 500 miles on a road trip to see the fall colors. It is pushing toward 98k, I'm looking forward to breaking 100k soonish. We'll see how the winter goes. My wife did her first turn in the drivers seat and did great after not driving a 3 pedal car for a few years.
I'm planning on keeping mine long term. The exterior looks new, the interior is close to that. It's a great drivers car and has enough creature comforts to keep my wife happy on long drives. Working AC/Heat and seat heaters help in that regard a ton! ![]() ![]()

Your car is mint, Jerry. 100k on one of those w good maintenance is nothing.
I recently heard of a 996 turbo w some crazy high miles, maybe 500k(?) Engine has never been opened and it runs great. These are seriously tough cars. ![]()

I have heard that the cars that are driven infrequently and gently are the most likely to have IMS bearing issues. The guys that rev the piss out of them cause oil to splash around and get places that Sunday drives won't take it. Or so the theory goes.

Great write up - nice job! I am probably going to pick up a 996 or 997 as my next vehicle (in a few years) myself. Great choice and enjoy!

Why would you be afraid to rev it? If it was going to break from running it would have broken by now.
I hit the rev limiter in my 222k mile M5 on a regular basis. |

Great read! I've read both of your articles now. On a personal note, I own a 2000 996 with 184,000 miles and have driven it as my daily driver for over twelve years now. Other than the trashed clear coat and a second gear synchro that's shot, the car is awesome. It's been supremely reliable over the years. I've always wondered if it's been my imagination that the engine still feels as strong as the day I brought it home 150,000 miles ago. Based on your experience, I'd say it probably still is.
I'll echo the comment above that you need not fear excursions to the redline. Mine sees it fairly often. My main reason for NOT hitting redline more often is that at least one of my spark plug tubes is a little leaky and will allow a little bit of oil past the seal at really high RPM, which then drips onto the very hot header tubes, resulting in a little blue haze in the wake of the car as I row through a couple of gears. The tubes are easy to replace, but I just haven't gotten around to doing the job yet. Last edited by 450knotOffice; 10-25-2016 at 09:51 AM.. |

Nice article. Read it before you posted this.
Keep a factory air filter in it and shorten the oil change intervals some. A lot if it's dusty where you drive.
