Really looking forward to this. I think we'll do May, but I suspect we'll like it so much we'll schedule another trip for some September. I've traveled all over the world, but have never been to Canada, so we'll definitely take a day trip to Victoria, probably see Butchart Gardens.

I like the suggestion of taking the float plane from Seattle to Friday Harbor and renting a car there. That would really add an exotic element to the trip.

Victoria, meh. I would rather spend time in Vancouver than Victoria(too touristy imo)

In general, the terrain becomes more dramatic as you go north.

Also, as was said before, the Salt Spring islands are worthwhile.

Sounds like you don't want him to stay long.

But yeah, if you want to get back into the States...

Quick update - we've booked a condo in downtown Victoria for four nights in August. We will then take a ferry to one of the San Juans and stay there for a few nights, then back to the mainland and spend a few nights in Seattle before flying home. Still have bookings to make, but the plan is solidifying.

Our family spent a short week in the Seattle area last summer before and after a cruise to Alaska. I got a lot of good advice in this thread. Short Vacation in Seattle Area I should update my thread to thank everyone who contributed and give a trip report.

Anyway, I've been in the area a few times and the heart of summer seems the time to go. We were there over the July 4th holiday and really never had crowds to deal with. We spent time in Seattle proper, did the Space Needle (highly recommend for sunset dinner) and Pike's Market (also highly recommend) and we took the ferry from Victoria, Canada to Port Angeles Washington. We spent the rest of the time in the Olympic National Park but we were in sight of the San Juans quite a bit. I don't think any time in the summer will be too crowded.

June is perfect, in my estimation, because the days are longest. The weather is nice. I think you can't go wrong.

I like the idea of taking the ferry from Victoria. Victoria is beautiful, if a bit touristy, and the ferries are a great experience. Do remember your passport. Border crossing is a breeze and the Canadian border guards are very polite and pleasant.

I was in Seattle in the 3rd week of May once many years ago, and the weather was great. THat's the extent of my experience.

I'd like to take the missus back.

No matter what you do, you'll have a great time. Victoria is a great place. Royal BC Museum is fantastic. Parliament is also located in the inner harbour and is open to the public. Well worth it. Empress Hotel is next door and is grand place. Very walkable town.
