How Do You Take 50TB Of Data Home From The NSA?

Referring to the NSA contractor who allegedly took 50TB of data from the NSA home over many years.

This seems weird.

I would think that for a NSA contractor working with highly sensitive data:
- All USB ports would be disabled
- All optical writers disabled
- All cloud storage blocked
- All email attachments blocked or scanned
- All photocopy machines monitored for who is making large number of copies
- All computers run software monitoring for file copying, file renaming, attempts to transfer data

I mean, even in the humdrum financial industry, the first 3 are routinely done, the 4th is sometimes done, and the last one too..

I've been required by compliance to explain certain emails, indicating that someone is scanning my emails at least some of the time.

Yes, where I work all of those things are done....

....today.

5 years ago, many or all of those weren't done or hadn't been done for long.

Yes, it's the NSA, but in same ways, it's also the govt.

Is their stuff looked down now? I'll bet it is or is in the process of being locked down.

Yeah, 50 TB is a ton, but over years, not really that hard to get by adding up a little bit all of the time.

You can now buy a 2 TB flash drive.

Clearly, he swallowed 25 condoms filled with flash drives.

In the secure environments I've worked in the more secure they were the more you could get away with.

The people typically have a more advanced skill set than the average Joe.

They tend to be the problem solver people.

Working around the distractions of restrictions is common.

There are a lot of roadblocks that interfere with your ability to do your job so you figure out workarounds.

Top that off with the more trusted your position the less you are scrutinized.

How? Easy... An external HD directly connected to the server via a USB cable.

I'm assuming he was an IT guy so he would have had full access to EVERYTHING including the server room.
Would they have software on the server to detect unauthorized copying? Probably yes but he could easily disable that.

How did one contractor steal 50TB of NSA data? Easily, say former spies | ZDNet

Most physical security stuff like disabling ports is done at the workstation level. If you have access to the servers or storage it can be pretty simple to circumvent safeguards in place to keep out average workers.

I did two years for one of the primary security vendors for DOD and other Fed departments.

All I can say is that so little has gotten out is what surprises me.

The bigger picture is Snowden and Martin are the NSA.

They are all playing freely in a tetrabyte sandbox, which is full of stolen information illegally sourced from other people's personal lives and proprietary information.

The NSA hub is located far away from where the Constitution is stored.

Modern, security-aware organization are nothing like that. They operate under the theory of least privilege. Each person has the necessary authority to do their job and no more.

That said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a big government bureaucracy is nothing like that.

Stealing data is not surprising. If I can view it on a screen, I can steal it.

The fact that we are talking about terabytes suggest that there were media files involved. Data, raw data, is tiny.

Maybe a copy of "Falcon and the Snowman." The directors cut.
