Looking for a Pick-Up Truck to Buy

I'm in the market to buy a pick-up. Crew cab is a must. Not liking the cost of new - would like something 2010 or younger. Anyone have one they are thinking about selling? Know of a good one? Gas or diesel - really don't want anything over 100,000 miles on it.

I suggest diesel, F250 CrewCab. Try to find a 2011 or later, as this has the later engine and does about 25-30% better fuel economy. A Lariat with decent options would be around $30K. And typical would be 80K miles.

The F250 has a softer ride than F350 and the 6 foot bed makes it easier to park.

What is your price range?

DO NOT BUY A FORD DIESEL newer than 2002. Please! I work on them all day. An absolute nightmare for the owner and the mechanic.

Can of worms opened. Toyota boys say buy this, Chevy boys say buy that. Ford bot.ys.. you get the picture. I have owned four diesel Fords from 7.3 non turbo to Powerstroke to 6.0 liter, loved them all but I doubt you need that. I have a 2012 F150 crew 4x4 with the 6.5 bed 5 liter 4x4 . Best riding truck I have ever owned. Mileage on highway 17-18 in town 15. No better than the big dollar diesels. Don't buy into the diesel mileage bs, Duramax Ford or a Cummins, They average 14-17 max on highway. Let the flaming begin, I've driven all of them and this is real. No, they don't get 20 mpg. Drove a new Duramax from OC to the desert, no trailer, crewcab, 4by, 14.5 mpg. My friends Dodge Cummins is the same. Have fun.

Can't be many trucks like that around in Texas. This could be a problem.

Later 6.0 trucks can be great, (2005-07), if they've been maintained and were not modified by mouth breathing idiots for more power. The current 6.7 Powerstroke is probably the best PU truck ever made, though they are expensive.

The early 6.0 trucks and the 2008-11 6.4 trucks are actually the only ones to avoid. The 6.4 was the worst engine ever sold, makes the 6.0s look indestructible.

If you spend 30k for an 80k mile 3/4 ton diesel truck as suggested above, you might as well get a new 1/2 ton truck, unless you really need to haul / tow. That's what I did. There are a LOT of choices in the high 30s / low 40s range if you stay away from decked out cowboy cadillacs. For a 10k difference you get to drive a brand new truck for 5+ years. Warranty, new tires, brakes, shocks etc. etc. To me this was a no-brainer ...

Lotsa choices so it just depends on what you need the tool to do for you. I own a fleet of them in different sizes and makes. Most trucks after 2010 are pretty reliable.

-Towing a heavy trailer- Diesel.
-Standard duty PU for general use: Ford, Chevy, Toyota Tundra gas V8
-Light duty to get in and out of tight traffic: Tacoma V6

Pick your poison. I have owned Dodge and Nissan but they are my least favorite.

I'm driving an old Dodge with no real trouble, 22 miles shy of 200k. One of the fenders is starting to bubble, but mostly because I don't give a damn. Drove it from Kentucky to northern Pennsylvania and back to pick up an old Moto Guzzi a couple of weeks ago.

I had a 2015 Ram 1500 with the 3.6 Pentastar V6. Take my man card away but the engine was plenty sufficient for my needs and I got a realistic 20MPG in mixed city/highway commutes. I wanted the Eco Diesel but struggled to justify the $5k premium. I bought one with mid-line Big Horn trim, so no leather but it was loaded with pretty nice tech (sat nav, sat radio, bluetooth, etc, etc). Window sticker was $38 but I got it close to $31 at year end. It was very smooth and comfortable. Mine was the quad cab (read, smaller crew cab) with the 6.5 foot bed.

Would still be driving it but we just relocated to Germany and I thought it would stick out like a sore thumb here (which it would), so shipping the Boxster instead.

Long story short, buy a mid-level trimmed (insert brand here) at year-end and walk away with factory fresh and long warranty. Trucks hold their value well because of their popularity.

missed the budget discussion but without a doubt the absolute best possible choice is the '06and earlier Tundra Double Cab. Low to mid teens. Buy it, do timing belt/water pump and enjoy.

I drove one for 10 years and regret letting it go. To the point that when I decided not to keep my newly bought Suburban I told my wife I could A: trade the Suburban on a new Tundra or B: Sell Suburban and buy another '06 Double Cab and let her go car shopping (we only want 1 car payment at a time max).

Is this for you or your son?

There are plenty on Carmax to look through that will give you a sense of the market.

When your son is ready I may have a 1999 Tacoma 5 speed manual I'll give him a deal on

2011, the engine changed to a Ford engine. Up to 2010, it was a Cummings.

I have a 2014 F350 disel. If I keep it to 65mph, it will do 20-21 mpg. Noone drives 65 in this state, unless it is in town ;-)

You might go looking to see what is leftover 2016 or 2015 on the lot. I bought my 2010 F250 for $14K under sticker in OctOber 2010, after it sat on the lot for 15 months. I would still have it today if it Ford would have fixed the smoke screen issue on hard acceleration left turns.

Cummings in a Ferd? Not happening. International made the powerstroke 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4. Ford did take over the 6.7 in 2011. The 2015+ 6.7 is superior to the earlier 6.7's.
