Garage
I always thought they put up the walls first, then put the roof on, but, I guess some guys like to do it their own way.

Maybe the car port is underground ?

When we put up our 104"x 60 building, we dug all 36 post holes 4' deep 18" across with a 70 HP bobcat/auger. We then nailed wind stays on the bottom/sides of the 6x6 posts, aligned them properly in the holes, and filled concrete around them to prevent just that scene.

Contractor. So my friend's not out anything yet, the builder got caught out by a freak storm. I think if he hadn't had any of the metal roofing installed it might not have failed.

Anyway, they think there's not much real damage, so start over and hope for the best
second time around.

Without a coupla serious cranes, how will they attempt to lift the rafters all as one, or will they dismantle first ?

I'm guessing take it apart and start over. There will be cranes!

When my current home was being built in 2007, there was a local arson guy setting forest fires; very close to me. I asked the builder if he had insurance on the framed structure?

He said, no, that's your responsibility.......Done before dark that day.....Lesson learned.

I guess that's what course of construction insurance is for. What a bad day for sure.

Those are trusses, not rafters.

Huge difference. With rafters, it would be pieces of wood all over 3 counties.

Sorry, I forgot my construction terminology.....I know all about them, I ran the telescoping boom Grade-all, lifting our 60' trusses into place, talk about a couple of pucker moments for a rookie operator.

It's called "builder's risk insurance" for a reason.

Yikes! I had a 30 by 40ft. pole building/shop built. They were working on the trusses the day the worst recorded windstorm (damage/loss of life) hit our area. They did shut things down a couple of hours before the worst of it hit. Luckily no damage

It would be interesting to see a pic before it came down. Wonder if they had any sheer walls up and/or diagonal braces.

I"m pretty impressed that the roof stayed together...

It's only about 1/4 sheathed, but has full stringers and it all remained in one single unit.

Neat.

Slide a couple beams under it and pick it up.

Don't think so. It's in "windfarm territory" as you can see, so they builder should have foreseen some windy days. Guess not.

All they need is about 10 to 12 forklifts and they can get right back on schedule in a day or two.
