whats with pelicans shipping prices
my wife can order a pair of shoes and get them shipped next day air for free.
she also gets free return shipping. I order a $2 CV boot clamp and it cost 4.75 for ground shipping. I was also looking at springs for my 88 325is. pelican has them for 271 PLUS shipping. turner has them for 241 and FREE shipping, what is it, does wayne need a 5th 962? I just spent $550 and 24 for shipping. I don't need it next day but free shipping would be nice, after all, like most of you I am a pretty loyal customer of pelican. I would hate to add up what I have spent here, not to mention the shipping sorry, had to rant. just get tired of the shipping and after seeing the springs for free that did not help.

I just ordered some stuff, that I am not in any particular hurry to get, and the shipping options were offered in a strange way. It initially offered three ways to have it shipped. $8 for regular shipping, $10 for 2 day and like $18 for overnight. When I went to check out, the least expensive way was not an option. I am not complaining over only a few bucks, but it seemed a little weird. Most of the vendors I use to order medical supplies for the office give me free shipping on everything over $100 to $150.

Shipping is never free. Whether you pay for it directly, or it's built into the price, nobody does it for "nothing". Shipping costs also have nothing to do with the price of an item. It's all down to size and weight of the package. Most people try to order things so they can ship multiple items together. If I were needing a $2 part, I might choose to buy it locally and pay no shipping.
Where you shop is up to you. Wayne has talked about shipping many times before and he's even changed the way things are done, in an attempt to fix some of these perceived issues. It's a complex issue. I don't mind paying for shipping. It is what it is. I'm not a huge fan of the Amazon model of selling. JR |

I don't want to pile on but....
I have spent more at Pelican than I ever want to add up. I have a thick stack of Pelican stickers. It is strange that they charge as much as they do for the shipping and have a high bar to reach to get to the free shipping level. If your order is LARGE enough you can even get a free T-shirt. I guess in the day of Amazon prime and Zappos free shipping it is just a bit unusual to see the charge for shipping so high. No doubt Wayne's bill for shipping each year is large. I just consider it my membership fee for using this board.

I don't buy a lot of Porsche specific stuff, but when I do I try to buy from here to support the community. Prices though, are often cheaper elsewhere... Thats no different than the other boutique sites such as Ferrari parts stores... I try to support sponsors, but shopping around you see that prices vary widely. I really wish this site sent out more of those 10 and 20% off coupons they used to do years ago... Almost every site does that now, and I get them religiously from almost every auto website I frequent... If its a couple bucks difference, I go with the sponsor. If its a huge difference, I go with the alternative... Last edited by bpu699; 11-15-2016 at 05:23 AM.. |

Bought some special order parts. Paid an extra fee but still cheaper then going through the dealer. Can't really complain. Well you can but no one would care...

I'm not the guy that wants everything for the least possible cost. In the end, that's a losing proposition.
As an example, take a store like Lowe's. They show up in town, maybe sell things a little cheaper until they run the local hardware store or lumberyard out of business, then the next thing you know, they are selling fewer choices of a particular thing, of poorer quality, at full retail. Everybody loses. I like Pelican, in that you are given choices and enough information to know what you might be getting. There's a lot of crap on the auto parts market these days and I don't want any of it. The forum is a nice feature, too. JR |

I managed an automotive accessory business back in the 80s and besides our walk-in showroom we had a very busy mail order dept. We shipped 800+ packages a day, all sizes from driving gloves to sets of wheels.
I negotiated between USPS, UPS and FedEx to get the absolute lowest price and played the three against each other to use one of them exclusively. UPS won. The ultimate cost to us was low enough to offer free shipping. In 1987 we were doing over a million dollars a month in sales with a 50%+ profit margin. Shipping cost was a drop in the bucket.

Volume ='s efficiency ='s less cost for the carrier to service your account.
You negotiate to capture some of those savings. You can then apply some or all of that to the margin from your suppliers. Not everyone gets the same margin off selling the same product from the same manufacturer.

Last night I build the basket and the reduced shipping (due to weight) was 16.75 but it jump to 28.75 upon checkout which I only noticed when I got the confirmation e-mail. This morning I try it again and this time the checkout cost for the 5 days ground shipping stayed at 16.75. I call their "second to none" Customer Service and the young lady fixed it right away.

My understanding is shipping costs have increased dramatically to businesses in the last year or so, regardless of volume.
I sure can tell you that shipping anything privately has increased, I lost my @as on a parts deal to include shipping to Canada recently.

I know with the shoes my wife bought, we saw them in a store for the same price, online had free overnight shipping with free returns. the store did not have the color she wanted. the online place may get the shoes cheap enough that they can eat over night shipping. zappos and dillards were the 2 stores. I see some of the prices pelican charges for parts, they have room for free shipping on some things, take CV joint bolts. I bought a bag of 50 from Fastenal for about the same price of what I would have paid for enough just to do the car. I think it was 24?? I needed a few intake gaskets. shipping was more than the gaskets. this is a GREAT site, wayne has a captive customer pool here. it would be nice to get some breaks on the shipping, especially when you need just one thing.

I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses. I would have probably ordered the shoes from the local store. Most of them will work with you on stuff like that. The CV bolts from Fastenal may be completely different than the bolts sourced through Porsche/Wayne. Fastenal used to have a good name, I have no idea what they sell now. My son uses some of their current products in the business he works for and hates them. With critical fasteners, I'm pretty picky about where they come from, given that there are now so many out there that are sourced from China and made from recycled soup spoons. Caveat emptor, as they say. Keep in mind on shipping the gaskets, you have the shipping cost, the packaging material costs, the labor cost to pick the part, pack and label it, etc. On little stuff, Wayne may not make anything. That's why you often see $1 as a minumum price on small fasteners. At some point, it costs more to sell one or two of something than you make from selling them. JR |

Lots more at play here than had been discussed. Can't type it all out on my phone but I'll try my best to explain it from the parts vendor perspective tonight.

I'm very pleased with prices and service from Pelican. Pelican employ staff who know the subject so we don't buy the wrong stuff or to fix our online order mistakes. Plus they don't mind doing international shipping to us dirty foreigners which is a nuisance with all the shipping and customs declarations. Thanks guys.

As others have mentioned I think Wayne has made a considerable effort to make shipping as reasonable as possible. Comparing a company that does 130 billion dollars in revenue (amazon who owns zappos) to pelican is not a great direct comparison.
Sites like zappo's and amazon have skewed customer expectations for shipping speed and cost. I'm certainly guilty of being frustrated with the cost and amount of time it takes pelican to get things out. I think in large part it's because of my skewed sense of reality from frequently using those large internet retailers. That said I've wandered at times because shipping duration to the east coast is longer and more expensive than I want. As an interesting fact. Do you know that Amazon prime costs amazon somewhere in the region of $300/customer? Also if you want to learn some crazy stuff about zappos read the book delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. He's a pretty cool dude, and the story is quite interesting. Or watch his talk at google which summarizes the book. Sorry for the tangent but it is a real interesting story:
