Anyone do savory Oat meal or hot cereal (cream of ...)
I was just wondering, I grew up with oatmeal that had a little butter, sugar and milk. These days, I try to limit the sugar, so I mostly use fresh fruit, or may use fruit and cinnamon or cardamom.
I don't think I ever had anything like cream of rice, cream of wheat or oat bran cereal growing up, but have had them all now, and like them. OK, I guess technically grits is a hot cereal, and I have had cheese grits. But many, many times over the years, I've wondered about a savory oat meal or other hot cereal. I've found a few recipes online. I'm wondering what you guys do if anything. With the diversity that we have on the board, you guys often seem to come up with really good stuff.

I occasionally had Cream of Wheat growing up as a kid. These days I like Instant Oatmeal (I'm lazy) during the winter. Otherwise - bowl of cereal and milk most of the time.

Steel cut oatmeal with raisins and walnuts. I put the raisins in the water as a I boil it before putting in the oats. I typically make 4 servings on Sunday night and divide it over 4 days (OCD is abundantly evident when I weigh what I make and then weigh each serving throughout the week). When I heat it in the microwave, I use a little sugar and milk. Steel cut has more texture and flavor to me than rolled oats.

I'm in the south. Grits. Cream of Wheat is for wimpy yanks.
![]() Butter, salt, pepper. Sometimes cheese is good. Sometimes jalepenos. Make extras, let them congeal in a large flat pan, make circles with a cookie cutter, and fry 'em up (think redneck polenta). |

Butter and dried cranberries with a pinch of salt.
I have started on buckwheat, kind of like cream of wheat and supposed to be better for you... not sure where that idea came from.

I like steel cut oatmeal, but when I'm on the road will even do the McDonald's oatmeal with fruit. It's decent if you're away from home. For some reason Starbucks oatmeal is not great.
For oatmeal cookies, use Quick Oats, and put them in a blender until they are powdered. |

I had cream of wheat, oatmeal, & other things as a kid. Now I buy a big bag of steel cut oatmeal from Costco & cook it with a pinch of salt, milk, a little butter, & sweeten it with honey. With me the problem has always been by 10 AM or before I'm starving and have to eat something else no matter how much oat meal I have. Been that way since I was a kid.

Oatmeal every day since my MI in March. I was buying those flavored pouch ones but I figured I could sprinkle some cinnamon on rolled oats and add a 1/2 cup of Blueberries after they were cooked and be 1/8th the price of the packaged ones.
1/3 cup rolled oats, 2/3 cup of water and a sprinkle of cinnamon in the microwave for 2:20 secs. Add the Blueberries when your done. enjoy. ![]()

Yeah, I've done a lot of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, or raisins sometimes with Cinnamon or Cardamom. I've even done banana and pecan.
Now I'm wondering about throwing some cooked bacon in with a little grated cheese and tossing a fried egg on top. Maybe cook the stuff with a vegetable stock or chicken stock instead of water.

I do the flavored packet oatmeal as well. After microwaving it with water I then add some milk. I then cut up a banana and apple and add to it. Low or no fat at all and get fiber this way.

1/2 cup of oatmeal
1 tablespoon maple syrup cook according to oatmeal directions When cooked add 2 tablespoons crushed walnuts or pecans milk to taste A variation I use is to add 2 tablespoons of chopped apple at cooking phase. sometimes if I'm really in an oatmeal mood I'll cook a double batch and refrigerate half for tomorrow.

Same here. Now I cook the oats and stir in an egg. Then I flatten the blend and cook it like a flapjack.

Attached is our family recipe. I ask my wife to add more raisins cause I like them.
Delicious.. Worth trying, won't disappoint. (Regular milk makes it a bit less sweet IMO) ![]() Good luck

I don't cook it myself, but I've had savory cream of wheat at friends' house in India. Typically made with something like cumin, onion, chilis, and peas. This is a southern Indian breakfast dish, but I don't remember what it's called. I like it fine, but prefer the usual American/European ways of making it.
BTW, those prefab packets of oatmeal aren't nearly as good for you as just making plain oatmeal and flavoring it yourself.

I have a liking for Grits with butter. I will stir in some cheese and an egg after it is about 1/2 cooked.
Tried Cream of wheat several times. Reminds me too much of school paste. not on my menu. On the other hand, oatmeal is great. Typically flavored with maple syrup or cinnamon and sugar. I always keep a few packets at work if I need a quick breakfast or afternoon snack.

The key to good oatmeal is to put in plenty of bacon.
Cook your oatmeal however it is you like it, some butter and brown sugar or maybe some maple syrup to taste. Cook some bacon crisp enough you can crumble it up, a couple good sized pieces per bowl is about right. When it comes to bacon, more is, in general, better.
