Toyota SR-5 Sport Truck

Picked this up from the original owner, factory a/c and still has the original dealer frames.

A brand new vehicle is a terrible investment.
But I would buy that exact same thing, off the lot today, if available.

A great little light truck workhorse. I have rung out a bunch of these over the years. Variations on the "Chicken tax" have all but eliminated import light trucks from the US market. A small, efficient, bare-bones mini-truck sold at a fair price would probably sell like wildfire in the US today but alas...

I had two of them back in college. One I rolled off road out in the desert. I beat that thing like if my life depended on it (it did) and came back and asked for more. Bench seat, single cab, and nothing else. Not even a tach and it ran and ran for many hard miles. Bought another just like it but with the extra cab. I will buy another again if they were available again new. 30-40k for a small pick up is stupid money today

I had to think about this for a minute. You mean license plate frames, right?
Initially I thought, "It's a sad thing that having the original frame rails is a selling point - but it is a Toyota." LOL!
BTW my '03 Tundra still had the original frame when I sold it.

I have a 2005 Tacoma SR5.

My dealer replaced my frame...

My 06 tundra was fast for a pickup. Very sporty handling and acceleration.

My '17 drives more like a luxury truck. Until you hit the tow/haul button. It is, I **** you not, like a darn boost button. Insane throw you back in the seat acceleration for a truck its size.

One of the best vehicles I ever owned was a Datsun 720 King Cab! Mini trucks are the best!

Nice find...back when they were still a reasonable size. I had a white 88 Mazda B2200, 5 speed A/C, extended cab, very similar to that and put lots of miles on it. Rust finally ate up the underside of it. I loved that truck. I'm jealous.--Dave

Nice! I love that generation of Toyota and nearly bought one but I stepped up to the 85 model so I could get an Xtra Cab.

Let me know if you ever find a source for the factory shift knob.

I have the 85 4x4 with EFI and regular cab. For the last 18 years, it keeps on trucking

We don't get to see many of that vintage around my state.

Rust ate these trucks to pieces decades ago.

I had to google 'chicken tax' to find out what it was. I had no idea it was in effect all these years. Small wonder the small truck has gone away despite a high demand.

I had a small Toyota before the EFI and I always wanted one.

Great-looking truck. A friend of mine in Portland has the early-90s equivalent and he thinks it's the greatest thing he's ever owned. It's on perpetual loan to friends and requires nothing more than oil changes. A couple of us are going to be arm-wrestling over it if he ever sells it!

Thank you, these old trucks always put a smile on my face. I will never drive another truck, 2.4l 22r motors is absoultely bulletproof. I Love my Porsches but Ill be buried in my Toy. My truck has a sticker inside the bed stating "assembled in Long Beach CA," meeting the chicken tax requirement. Personal resto several years ago, everything stock, '83 Sr5

Over the years, I had:

1987 4X4 Xtra Cab SR5 wrote off - got T boned
1986 4X4 Xtra Cab wrote off - T boned bus - lucky to be alive
1984 4X4 Regular Cab Shortbox with carb
1987 4Runner SR5
1980 4X4 with Weber carb, headers, wolverine cam - that 20R was as quick as my dad's 87 SR5 with the Turbo Gas engine
1988 4Runner V6

And a couple old Landcruiser. My wife still drives a Lexus LX450 with the lockers and JDM factory winch.

Awesome trucks, the newer ones like my Tundra, not so much.

too cool

I learned to drive a stick on a ~90 Toyota pickup. My dad had the cheaper Mitsubishi which was a tank. I loaded it down to the point the bumper dragged over speed bumps, loved that thing. I drove a buddies ~late 80's v6 a while ago and was surprised how slow it was, takes a little time to get used to the pace.
