Crazy Model Flying

I flew R/C for a long time, many moons ago, but this is a whole new level:

I still fly planes and helicopters - I can fly "3d" with my helicopters and I was a big pattern guy back when I was younger....

It takes skill to do what he is doing..... I don't call that flying though. I don't call 3d flying in regards to helicopters. You just taking a massively over powered model and throwing it around.

I assume that thing is feather light and some of the action is due to gyroscopic effect more than aerodynamics?

Very light, large control surfaces. Not sure if prop or motor reverses. Also don't know if there are gyros or some sort of electronic stability.

It's actually called 4D. The pitch of the prop is controllable, even reversible.

I agree that's not necessarily what I would call flying but it is rather impressive and takes tremendous skill. What really get's me is the hard core 3D helicopter pilots. You are basically flying a stick with very little visual orientation. The second you lose your bearings (left, right, up, down) you are done. The plane gives a few more visual clues

I have seen Bruckmann fly at the Toledo show in the past. It inspired me to get back into RC for a couple years. I have a couple of the electric 3D machines but none with the reverse thrust capability. Learning to hover and flying around slow with nose up using lots of rudder took a bit of reprogramming of my brain/fingers.

crazy difficult to do but agree it's not what I think of as 'flying'.

had a brief love affair with rc planes. slow stik (no wind, could fly out of my driveway), some foam crap and a 6' electro telemaster that was amazing to fly. got out when I tried my hand at low wing sporty stuff and nearly set a soybean field on fire after a moderate crash with a lipo battery.

it is very fun stuff.

I flew the 1:1 scale, I didn't need remote control, alas I had to sit inside it, and control it from the seat! LOL
