Volunteer Police Officer?

Anyone here a volunteer cop, or a paid cop that works with volunteers? It's something I've started looking into...I'd be interested in some personal stories.

Maybe nutz, that's why i'm getting some more info.

Here, it's a county sheriff position. Fully trained (13 month in the Academy), fully qualified, just not paid. 20 hours per month minimum. Any job, any location that a fully paid officer could have.
Basically, you can help the police without giving up your day job, and in return they get boots on the ground without increasing the cost to the city/county.

Evidently looking for someone who is independently wealthy, to settle disputes between those who aren't ?

I meant, it seemed that there was some...attitude...about it being a volunteer police officer, when i don't think there is the same...attitude...towards a volunteer fireman

I mostly wondered if anyone had done this volunteer (not civilian) police work. I had never heard of it until a few weeks ago, but research shows it to be common (but mostly unknown) in large cities. I'm not trying to switch careers here, but I am trying to expand my experiences, give myself something very interesting to do other than be a desk jockey in my free time, and hopefully contribute to my city in a positive manner.

Mike,

Here in our little town, we have a "Citizen's Patrol" whereby residents can ride in specially marked police cars and offer surveillance....something I have been reminding myself to look into...off to make some calls.

Turns out is just civilian volunteer work to assist with traffic control at events and other such types of work...

Dallas has been doing that for a long time - if you look up "Dallas police reserves" there is a lot of info about the program.

I know someone that did that for over a decade; some good people volunteer but many are ego maniacs looking for a license to boss people around, put hands on them, etc. (the same can be said for regular police, however).

Yes, this is Harris County Sheriff's Reserve. Not well advertised. I only learned about it when the paper interviewed a volunteer who got kinda messed up while taking down a perp, and commenting of how someone willing to do that for free is nutz

Just low hours and no pay.

Hey Paz, you wrote that you would get weapons training. So you would be a regular patrol officer carrying a weapon? Would you get insurance or legal help if you needed to discharge your weapon?
