You Tube through your TV?
What's the easiest way to watch You Tube through your TV?
I was thinking about hooking an old Laptop to my TV but is there a better way? (Something with a remote would be ideal)

Smart tv? My Vizio has a Youtube channel. A Vizio I bought 2 months ago doesn't have the channel, but will stream from my phone.

Time for a new Visio (or similar) tv with wifi. Pretty standard stuff these days. I have had it for two years now.
I can run it standalone with Netflix, YouTube, Amazon prime along with the usual cable and DVDs I could even enable voice control. But I am not going to. I can also launch YouTube through my iPhone and display it on the Visio. HDMI input for games too. |

Smart tv directly, apple tv via hdmi, or iphone airplay by wifi.
Really depends in your TV: does it have hdmi, is it wifi capable...?

If you have Samsung devices it is on the Smart TV as an app, or you can Screencast from your phone or tablet to your TV with the press of a button. Usually I find it's easier to bring it up on my phone then swipe it to my TV w/ Screencast.

The easiet way, without replacing tv, would be to buy a blu-ray player for about $60
Most new ones come with the youtube app....just need wifi (wired or wireless) to the player. Blu-ray player remote will control Youtube app.

The capability is present on most entertainment systems these days.
Even cable co supplied set top boxes have YouTube, Pandora, Netflix, etc apps Get a dedicated device, Apple TV, Roku, Firestick. The apps that come with DVD players, set tops, tend to be slow and the integration is often less than ideal. Personally I prefer Apple TV's and Raspberry PI's. If you are a bit of a geek the PI offers lots of ways to get your freak on. And they are cheap. $50 or so will get you the current gen with a case , SD card and choice if operating system, openelec, KODI, OMC. If you just want plug n play get a ROKU or similar. I'm a fan of separating this stuff out as a dedicated component. Allows you flexibility to move the device to a different TV if and when you may need to.

Also, if you have a TV or Blu-ray player with a USB port where you could plug in a thumb drive to play files, you can always download most videos on youtube to your PC and then play them via the USB port. That's assuming that none of the options above are better or easier.
I have an 8 year old Samsung TV that has USB. I don't think it has a youtube app, but since I've never wired it for network, I haven't checked, but it might. I think my old DirecTV receiver allowed us to watch youtube directly. Also, my Apple TV has a youtube app, and for some things, I download the video to my PC and stream to the Apple TV that way.

I just replaced my 10 year old TV with a new Samsung from Costco. Netflix now streams extremely well through their app. My old Roku would no longer support Netflix HD and our not as old Blu Ray player buffered a lot with Netflix. I have plenty of download speed. Streaming new ultra 4k HD now is no problem. Youtube is built in. Newer shows that take advantage of the technology are amazing. We are now ready to cut the cable/dish cord.

Chromecast. $35. Stream anything from your phone to your TV.
It has no impact on battery life of your phone, and your phone doesn't even need to stay connected to your network once you kick off a tv show or other content (netflix, prime, etc). Plus, would you rather use the keyboard on your phone where you can type and search content quickly or with your TV / DVD remote having to select each letter w/ the arrow buttons?

2nded on chrome cast. Its much easier to use your phone as an interface than a clunky hardware app

I have a Samsung smart TV and I stream Youtube, etc via my Playstation 4 and an HDMI cable. I like the interface better on the PS4.

FWIW, the standalone devices, Apple TV, ROKU, PI (Kodi, OMC, Openelec) all have phone based remote apps.
I use them for my devices, cuts down the remote clutter and gives you the onscreen keyboards. Ideally if you have an old tablet lying around you can give it a second life as a master remote for your media room.

I'm fairly certain that the Chromecast streams from the web via your wifi (both your phone/tablet and chromecast have to be setup on the same wifi network). It may require your phone/tablet to get started, but then once it starts, the stream is direct from the 'Net.
