How about your 10 FAVORITE Porsches?
There can be endless argument over the 10 best Porsches, but only you can list for favorites. What are your 10 favorites? For me:
1. I absolutely love my '56 Speedster 2. I really, really like my '56 coupe, not a great car but a lot of history 3. My '88 Carerra is a pain in the ass, but I like it 4. I liked driving the 5 speed 912s of the late '60s 5. Always wanted a Super 90 GT because a friend of mine had one and they are weird 6. I LOVE the 917 because it is the most bad ass car ever. 7. I loved the one drive I had in a 914-6 - that should probably be #2 on the list 8. A 930 Turbo - gotta be one of the world's greatest cars, maybe should be #2 9. Never drove a 928 but always thought they were cool, but not a #2 10. A 904 - they just look cool 11. A 1965 2 liter 4 cam - just because

I've loved different P cars for different reasons but credit to you for your un-Pelican-like correct spelling.

1) 917K. Looks great. Sounds great. And with 1970 & '71, put Porsche on the map as a Big Dog.
2) 935-76. There were more successful 935 variants, but this is the 935 that has that shape for me. 3) 934. What a hot-rodded 930 looks like. 4) 930. Cause those of us in CA can't hot rod our cars (legally). 5) 917/20. The Pink Pig--there is only one car with this livery. 6) 964 Turbo 3.6 (1994). Looks kinda like my 930, but with about 80 more horses and a lot less turbo lag. And those so-so-sexy Speedline wheels. 7) 964 3.8 RSR. It just has that look. 8) Pretty much any variant of the GT3 series. You can't drive vintage stuff all the time. Or heck, the new 911R; it's a non-PDK GT3, after all. 9) 908/3. It has that fugly blunt body. Function > form. Love it. 10) Yellowbird. The 911 from my youth. Can't believe I didn't include the 956/962 series, a long hood, 959, CGT, 918, or a 993TT (made me feel like Superman) in the mix. I guess that's because there have been way too many great cars to roll out from Zuffenhausen.

At the top of the list for me is my 986 Boxster. Why?
Low barrier to entry: It's cheap enough to own and operate that it is a good gateway car to introduce new people to the Porsche marque and the car hobby in general. Yet, it is still new enough to feature such conveniences like electric tops, functional AC and somewhat modern safety features Not to mention, it came at a time when Porsche needed a sales boost and arguably put the company in a position financially to develop the products it sells today. Plus, it's just fun to drive. ...and that exhaust note! |

968 Turbo RS
A perfect combination of looks and ability Pity they only made 4......yes FOUR Or how about a 968 Turbo. They made 16 of those so I have four times the chance of ever seeing one... Last edited by nzporsche944s2; 02-12-2017 at 01:32 AM.. |

Are we saying "what is your DREAM Porsche?" I find that my tastes lean toward mid engined Porsches these days. I say these days because I own so many rear engined air cooled Porsches.
1. 918 Spyder. I should just get this one out of the way now. Based on how surprisingly good the 987.2 is. 2. 916 3. 914-6 GT. Based on how much I love my 914-6. 4. 993 TT 5. Carrera GT 6. 917-30. I first read about this car when I was 12, and read "The Unfair Advantage", by Mark Donohue. That year Porsche won Le Mans, and it started my Porsche journey for me. I believe it may also be the first racer that legendary Norbert Singer worked on, and helped to dominate Can Am. 7. '84 Carrera in silver blue. Yes, I bought this car. It was the one that I lusted after my entire high school years, and it was started by an article in Car and Driver showing a lady dressed like a nun. That car was black, but then I saw the movie "No Man's Land" in 1987. I was very impressionable at that time. 8. In the book "Excellence Was Expected", there is a picture of Harm Lagaay sitting next to a prototype model. It looks to be a street car that is vaguely reminiscent of the 917-30 short tail racer. I would like that prototype, if one was ever made. 9. 1970 914-6. 10. my next Porsche, whatever that turns out to be. |

I have only owned one Porsche (my current), but I'll play:
#1 - 959 - Way ahead of its time, and this thing is still a modern supercar by many standards. #2 - The new 911R - Saw one yesterday - very cool. #3 - 993 Carrera 4 - Air-cooled, all-wheel drive, and certainly more attainable than a 959. #4 - The '75 Targa in my garage. #5 - Cayman (post IMS issues, of course) - In my opinion, the most "bang for the buck" you can get in a used Porsche. #6 - 908 - Anything with 8 cylinders and a required rear elevator/flaps to keep the wheels planted deserves to be on the list. #7 - 906 / 904 - These things just oozes "old-school cool" #8 - 917 - These solidified Porsche racing dominance #9 - The classic 356 - Motoring in style #10 - 935 - Can you imagine the grin on the first Porsche test driver who got the turbos wide open for the first time? ![]() |

1. My Slantnose 930 hot rod
2. My 77 911S hot rod - I have had a lot of fun in this car and created a lot of memories in it 3. My 76 930 4. My old 73 911T chump car that Andrew15 and I built - this was a very fun car 5. The GT3 that I plan to own next. 6. GT2 7. 934 8. 918 spider 9. GT3 Cup 10. The 70 911 hot rod I plan to build up like the chump was.

Tough to argue the 550 Spyder. I drove one yesterday, well on Xbox with my son. I'm terrible. Got me thinking about a kit car. Still too expensive.
Since I won't be getting one soon, I would go with a hot rodded 986 S. Not over the top, just lowered, a sports exhaust, aluminum pedals and a short shift kit. Not sure they make RS door panels. Those would look nice on a convertible. I guess I dream within my reality. |

The 917 is what made me love this brand. It dominated, and was outlawed. Too powerful??
It would give these modern cars a run for their money with the right drivers. Remember watching this car and it flew! Like the 944's cause I'm a 116 nut! Rear gear box, Balance! Also like the 914's. 550 is totality cool, but seems to be a very dangerous car, even a fender bender could kill you, snap your neck!

The 550 Spyder is a death trap. They look cool but are about as advanced as a blown hemi in a model T...
We had a 550 replica show up to a PCA DE I was running a few years ago. None of the instructors would instruct in it with the lap belts and the flexy banjo steering wheel and 4 wheel drum brakes. I drew the short straw and though it was fast, it was absolutely terrifying to drive, let alone instruct in fro the passenger seat.

That's not what I was thinking when I asked the question, but it is an interesting question. When I bought my Speedster over 40 years ago it was my dream Porsche. I guess it still is, but if I was just dreaming I'd like a nice clean 917 please.
