That one is pretty beat. "Fresh paint". Yeah, how good is that and what's it hiding?

Based solely on the grammar and syntax of the ad I suspect that it is a fake. It looks calculated to be close enough to market price that it doesn't raise a red flag but low enough to attract a lot of attention.

I was just reading the Excellence magazine featuring the Boxster...seems the advice was to avoid those early ones.

I've read the same but I know of two high millage local ones that run fine.

One has traveled well over 300,000 kms and aside from regular consumables has only just had the in tank fuel pump replaced.
They really are well built cars.

nothing wrong with early ones. Cheapest ones around here are @ $7K now but still plenty of good ones in the 10-13 range..

The early cars are actually quite fun, I had a 1997 with 135k that was still nice and tight and ran great. The base interior holds up really well, this one really didn't even rattle. Except for the occasional suspension bushing and regular maintenance they are really solid cars. The base cars in 1997 were the lightest of the bunch, 205 HP moves a 2800 lb car nicely, and the base 2.5L is a smooth and rev happy motor. You can find a nice early Boxster for $8-10k with a little shopping, they are about the best sports car deal going right now.

The car may be more valuable than we think. The ad indicates it is fwd. How many of those did they make?

2000 for $6300
2000 Porsche Boxster Base 2.7L 5 Speed

And, as always, you can find some deals if you search Craigslist for "boxter."

Now that I have the magazine in front of me, to clarify... "Bearing cover problem primarily affects 1997-1999...Most cars will have been retrofitted with the new part."

Also, porous crankcases: "...limited to 2.5 liter Boxsters built in 1998 and early 1999...usually failed in the first several thousand miles...steer clear of low-mileage 1998 and 1999..."

So for the most part, should be a good buy.

Shoehorn a 911 engine and you're golden.

Wayne installed a Carrera engine in his Boxster a few years ago. Does he still have that car?

I hunted for an early boxster a couple years ago and in the SF bay area, they bottomed out around 5500 at that time. So that's been the going rate for a while. I got very close pulling the trigger a couple times but always would find issues with the cheapest cars for sale. One car I was ready to buy, it was about 6k IIRC, cash in my pocket, and before I dealt, hooked up the OBDII reader. Came back with variable cam timing actuator / solenoid (?) issues. A quick internet search turned this up to be a rather expensive fix, so I passed ...

One day I will get a boxster. Likely once the TDI goes back to VW.

To be fair, if you are skimming the bottom you are always going to dredge up some trash.

Yes. Indeed. 10k would have bought something decent. 15k would have been a nice "S". But I didn't want to spend 10k. I was hoping for cosmetics and age dropping the price, but never could find anything that didn't have issues that were beyond that. Had a few with leaks (oil and or coolant) too, seemed also common on the "bottom of the barrel" cars.

So, back to the OP - those 5k cars exist but they are probably not the best buy.

I checked CL and a roach for 4K. Some S cars for 10 - 13. I may realign my priorities. Cheap fun!
