Can anyone comment on the DVR functionality offered by Sling? |

We use Kodi so the kids don't have to swap out disks all the time. |
Two years in and the service is much better! The problem is, it's DirectTV and I should have known they'd gradually hose me. The deal was supposed to be as an early sign on if I kept my plan I kept the same price for as long as I kept the plan.... Forward two years and I've had two price increases. Both increases were due to "upgrades" in my plan..... that I never asked for. AT&T is dangerously close to losing my cell phone and TV business.
"Go Big is yours to hang on to, even though it’s not available to new customers. However, because programming costs continue to rise, your package will be increasing $10/mo beginning 05/11/2019" When I signed on in 2017 the service cost 35/mo plus tax. It went up to 40/mo in early 2018 and will now be 50/mo |
I had to tell DirectTV I was moving to Australia in order to dump them. Never, ever again.
|
Nick, are you with DirecTV or DirecTV Now?
|
Nick,
I dropped direct. We've been using Pluto.tv and tubitv.com lately to supplement netflix. Both are free. Going to try Locast next. |

Thanks.

Got the "free" appleTV then shut it down. So basically got DirectTV now for 3 months free for the price of the AppleTV. Just do Kodi, Netflix, Hulu, Yahoo(free) with my AppleTV.
Hooked my Antenna up to my TV and found I fall asleep trying to watch broadcast TV. Just can't stay awake thru their 5 minute or longer blocks of commercials. If I liked it was going to get a network tuner so could do antenna TV anywhere on my wifi. Doing a month to try out F1 TV. Have to pull it up on my computer then air-play it to the AppleTV to watch on my big screen. Maybe they will come out with a player for AppleTV. |
But if I get rid of my service, how will i ever know if they find the treasure on Oak Island!?

Just got the same notice. Will have to go back out to the market and see what’s available. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I am a slinger - have been for a couple of years - no price increase, no contracts, has what I want for a decent price, antenna for local channels, Roku Ultra 4K tv and 400mps from xfinity (business expense).
The TV is sort of cool - you put a thumb drive in it and it will 'record' live over the air TV so you can pause it and back it up - it stores about 90 minutes of live TV, great for live sports. Also it gives you full grid info on live TV and sling - something lots of us have gotten used to - sort of hard to give up the grid. I am very, very happy.... |
Looking at Hulu it's $44/mo but I get locals included where I don't get that yet from DTVNow (small market) For $50/mo with DTVnow I'm getting HBO which allows me to use HBOgo or my college student can anyhow. Sling's biggest bundle is $40/mo. Doesn't offer the same number of channels and doesn't have HBO..
As much as I hate that they have increased my pricing once again, it looks like it's still the best deal for everything that I'm getting. A friend is talking about "jailbreaking" a firestick. It's not the first time I've heard someone mention this and the things this opens up for the firestick. As I understand it, it's really not much more than adding KODI to the firestick and then an ap and watching pirated programming. Not a fan of that idea. |
ok, cord cutters, what is your internet service? I have Cox and I am assuming if I decide to dump TV but keep internet so I can get the streaming stuff there will be some price to pay to them.
|
I have fiber optic 100mbps up/down costs about $50/mo. I'd have the service whether I use a streaming service or not because of my business. When I was a CenturyLink customer I paid about the same for 20mbps as a stand alone service. The 20mbps was good for streaming but their service out where I live was sketchy so I switched to a provider that had just planted a bunch of fiber optic cable in the ground.
|
I've had DirecTV Now for a few months. I use the app on a Fire TV Stick. It's been buggy, and has gotten worse. They just sent me an email telling me that they are going to increase my price.
Sorry, I ditched cable for just this sort of BS. Lousy spotty service they wouldn't or couldn't fix and constant price increases. I switched to Frontier for an ISP and will be trying either Hulu with live TV or YouTube TV next. |
PlutoTV still free, expanding channels. Dr Who, NasaTV, Now on biography is Albert Einstein, next the beatles.
We are using it more and more. |
I should probably start a new thread called "the experiment is over". The buffering never really ended even though I have 100 mbps internet service. And to top things off, in the two years I've had service they've now gone from $35 when I started to getting a letter the other day that my service would now cost $60 per month. They say it's due to improvements but they're things I never requested and honestly don't use.
So my new thread could also be called "moving to Hulu Live TV" adios AttTvNow |
I gave up on cable TV several years ago , first with Sling and now with Hulu Live . Very happy with Hulu . Unfortunately I think everyone will see " rate creep " whether you have conventional cable or internet streaming their business models are very similar . When their cost of doing business goes up those cost increases get passed onto the consumer .
Today I am paying less for streaming than I did for cable , how long that will last is a mystery . Conventional cable companies are not stupid , if internet streaming cuts into their profits they buy out the streaming companies or start their own . How you watch TV is like the Borg ........ resistance is futile you will be assimilated 😀 |
