Large growers who contract with national chains are given a "take it or leave it" price. They have to go to their contract growers, who must decide whether to live with it or starve.

I figured these were loss leaders, but the prices have persisted for about 2 months, and all of the local grocers have joined in a price war.

I want to say 18 eggs cost around $3 or so, but I am more or less guessing. Less than $5 and I'm not that into it.

I, too, was at the grocery store yesterday and commented to my wife then. I tend to pay attention, because we have our own chickens/eggs, so meat and egg prices are a subject of interest to me.
