Dealership wrecked my truck!!

2015 titan with 10k miles.
Had coupon for oil change so dropped the truck off and went to lunch.
Barely sat down and got a call from them asking if I could go back to the shop.
Dumb a$$ scraped the wall while entering the service bay.
Of course they will fix, but WTF?

They likely have the lowest paid employee move the vehicles around. He is the dude that brings a car from the parking lot to the mechanic and parks it when the mechanic is done with the work. They hire any mouth breather with a driver's license.

Make them "fix it right" and paint that entire fender and not just blend it in. And if it need a new fender, insist is is replaced and not just covered in bondo.

My friend Alan did stuff like this when he worked for the dealer. He had 5 accidents in 6 months. They finally let him go .
Some people , just cannot drive, and park

Dealership wrecked my truck!!

I worked on a GM production line in the mid-1970s. Behind my work area was their body repair area where they fixed cars damaged while loading. They were always busy.

My wife did the same thing in my new Titan about 10 years ago in a parking garage at work. Repair still looks good, paid cash ($700) to save the insurance hit. Kind of strange that it's on the drivers side.

No matter how well they repair or replace the damaged areas, when you go to sell or trade in the experts will be able to tell a repair was done. I would suggest a letter from the dealer stating they did the damage and did the work so you'll be covered.

My 2003 Mini Cooper S had this happen to the driver side front fender unloading from the ship. I never knew about it and neither did the dealer but when I went to trade it in, the next dealer's inspector caught it right away. She showed me how to spot that sort of thing.

Rusnak Volvo did the same thing before we even took delivery of the car! I bought my wife a new XC60 right before they closed. They said everybody left, so they would prep and detail it in the morning and that I could pick it up at 10am. When I got there at 10am the next day, the passenger door looked just like your truck. They said they would fix it, and that I could pick it up in a week. I refused the vehicle. They fought me for about three days. When I called my lawyer he said I never "took delivery" of the vehicle and he wrote them a letter. All I did was mention the lawyer and they let me take a different XC60. PITA, but I wasn't buying a new SUV with Bondo on the door.

That's going to be reported to carfax, therefore diminishing value at resale.

I'd be pushing for more than just a repair.

Talked to the body shop.
They will remove the bed, drill out the spot welds, and plug weld in the entire panel.
Should (hopefully) look factory when done.

The truck has running boards. He hit that first, and kept on going.
Musta been cruising.

They have been professional so far.
Gave me a used truck off the lot until mine is fixed.
Going to fix some minor scratches on the other side of the bed from one of my off road excursions.
Also said they will hook me up with some accessory.
Not sure how much they have in mind, but I found a cool under seat storage box for $400.

No, didnt really freak out.
Trying the honey approach first!

Any damage to the wheel assembly? Hard to believe that the tire wasn't scraped at the very least.

Hmmm, not so sure.

Carfax gets their info from ins co's.

The dealer would have to claim it and their policy is not going to be a standard auto policy like you and I have. It would cover the business.

Their out of pocket is going to be the parts making it unlikely worth claiming.

They can eat the labor, it's not really an expense or lost revenue anyway.

I think that I'd rather have the original panel repaired by someone who knew what they were doing than replaced. The damage shown could be popped-out close to 100%, once again by someone good. A true metal man. The ascendancy of PDR has revived actual metal workers as opposed to bondo artists. I don't think that most body shops appreciate these people, #1 because they could ear into a significant part of their business and also because the work takes time and they'd rather do the quicker, more profitable job of replacing or filling damaged panels.

Don't get me wrong, there are times when panel replacement is the only solution but this isn't one of them. And replacement of factory spot welded panels is never going to be completely correct or undetectable because the body shop welds are not made by a million dollar robot that the factory uses when they build the truck.

Hope this link works, just to give you an idea of what a real metal man does:

The dealer is going to file this on their insurance as a workplace accident. They pay insurance for this too. I would be definitely going for more than just the repair on the truck. Just me though, I wouldn't want it back after something like this due to resale value. If you don't care, then just have them fix it and go about your day.

Carfax gets their info from many sources. My small 5 man auto repair shop allows them to access our records. I have checked a few vehicle reports and every one of our invoices on that vehicle is shown on carfax so I assume body shops would be the same.

FYI; I've been told that car rental companies have their own body shops so it never goes into the Car Fax data base. Be careful if buying a used car from a dealer, ask if it's been a rental.

The repair cost is just over $3k, and they have a $4500 deductible.
Service manager said this will not go through insurance so will not be on Carfax.
Been looking at accessories. Don't really want anything??

Interesting.

If you don't mind my asking, what's the benefit to your shop?

I assume it's compensation for access?
