Taking this thread sideways with an impending hijacking.
Compare this to an impending hijacking such as flight 93. The cockpit was overtaken and one hijacker stayed in the cabin to prevent the passengers intervening. The hijackers had a plan and the passengers of course did not have a plan until they realized there was nothing to lose. At what point does joe individual step in and do something or not at all. Apologies for bringing back painful memories of flight 93 but much can be learned from these situations.

I have to take a "refresher course" every 5 years. The primary thing the course is about is changes in the laws. The other 90% is beating into us that using your CHL for anything other than self defense is a bad idea. We are not law enforcement. We are not heros. We cannot take the law into our own hands and dish out justice. Protect ourselves, family and people in our charge.
Case in point. The following video. in 2012, this (at the time) 71 year old man shoots a would be robber. The rest start to flee. At this point he ADVANCES on them and continues firing. That is where he made his mistake. He protected his own life by firing, but continuing the fight once the robbers were running is where innocents get hit.

Now, coming to the aid of a police officer, where they accept your help and they deputize you, you are safe to play the hero.
