Tahoe Z71 STOLEN

I came out of a store today to find my 06 Tahoe gone. I couldn't believe it. Who wants an 11 year old vehicle? Now it's in the insurance companies hands.

Damn, that sucks! Even if all is made well, there are the hassles involved in finding a replacement, dealing with insurance, etc. Not to mention the first hassle of getting home and calling the cops.

The police took the report over the phone. A friend picked me up, and dropped me off at Enterprise car rental. My insurance company (CAA AAA in the States) approved the rental within 30 minutes of me contacting them. I have a new Durango R/T for now.
They're asking $4000-$8000 in the classifieds up here. In the States they're asking $10,000 for the same vehicle. My truck is a U.S. vehicle, I purchased it in North Carolina.

Because you can't kill those damn things.

Still have the 01' we bought new off the lot.

From a value POV, best money I ever spent on a vehicle.

We like them so much that we have two.

Keep trying to buy the wife a new truck, she's highly resistant.

They're attractive to thieves because they have few anti theft protections built in and the parts are valuable because it's a popular model that has a big demand for aftermarket parts.. That makes them easy to steal and chop. They're also easy to take apart once they're stolen. That poor truck has probably been taken down to the frame by now and its parts are in a half dozen repair shops.

Those are the winter/rims and tires. I have a set of aluminum rims in the garage.

You're right, that truck was dependable. In never let me down in the 6.5 years I had it.I bought it in North Carolina in 2010.
I may get a newer one 07-09

I was thinking it's on its way to Africa. If they stripped it I had wheel locks on the rims. They're going to have to work at taking the wheels off.

I've purchased cars from insurance auctions that had wheel locks. A properly-sized circle cutter with no pilot bit will cut them off and leave the lug undamaged.

If you have the proper tool (as any tire shop), the locking lug is removed in less than a minute each.

Just curious...

1. How long were you in the store?

2. What type of parking situation/area?

3. I don't know anything about how easy it would be to steal a vehicle like this,
but do you suspect that someone used a masterkey, a slim jim, or just pulled up
with some sort of a repo vehicle and took it?

You might be able to ask if anyone working in that store or neighboring stores
saw anything. Any security cameras nearby?

It's fairly easy to steal that truck because it doesn't have an ignition interlock. You can just punch the ignition and drive away. Slim Jim to get in, hammer a #4 Craftsmen screwdriver straight into the ignition and turn it until it breaks the lock and the starter engages. Many parts on this truck are interchangeable with even newer models so it's pretty valuable chopped to pieces.

Newer vehicles have an electronic ignition interlock in the key. You need the actual key to start the vehicle, which is why new keys from the dealer are so expensive.

This is correct. It is in a container and long gone. Russia, Eastern block, Africa, whatever. It's gone.

There is zero chance the Metro Toronto police will investigate EVEN WITH VIDEO.

Collect your money from insurance and move on.

Not really. Years ago, I bought a truck with wheel locks with no key. One of the guys that I worked with that had been a hoodlum when he was younger told me "go to Sears, buy four 6-point 11/16" sockets and a big hammer. Pound the sockets on over the wheel locks and remove with a breaker bar."

Worked like a charm, except I was poor, so I bought one socket and used the lifetime warranty to get the other 3.

as a former owner of the suburban that came after yours (gmt900) I believe it was stolen because it was the last non-EPA farked up version GM made.

I would not buy the newer version.

Sorry to hear of your loss Brian. It is easy to forget how attractive a car is to a thief .
Here in Edmonton many vehicles are stolen coz the keys are left in the car and the engine is running. Also conversely a would be thief is parked close to your car and scans the remote signal to your car when you lock it remotely and go to the store or wherever.

I have been told that manually locking the driver's door does not transmit any signal so it is more securely locked.

Can the on-star system help track it? I've never owned an on-star era GM vehicle so my knowledge is limited on this but was wondering if this was an option.
