.22 ammo discussion..not about the "shortage"..the variations.

i'm handgun shopping. boiled it down to the only .22 i can legally buy in CA. (dont get me started..please. save it) at least it made the choice easy..(<--in green font please)

i am buying a Browning Buckmark. the target bull barrel version.

i just got back from hunting AZ, and in the dead time afternoons we got out .22's and target shot. i shot my brothers Ruger MarkIII, and felt like a damn marksman! we also chased cottontails.

my friend brought different types of ammo..subsonics, segmented, hyper velocity..mexico, CCI,..it was staggering. he had a small duffel bag of the variations.

i just remember buying bulk Remington "GOLD" boxes for plinking, and CCI stingers or yellowjackets for hunting.

with the hyper velocity segmented ammo from CCI, that .22 is insane..you could protect yourself with one. it blew up a 2.5 gallon water jug. 1600+ fps!!

what are you shooting? i need a great hunting round for a backpacking sooty grouse hunt in the Sierras. .22 handgun hunt!!

I think the thing to remember that all .22 brands are messy during clean up. I hate hopps-9 that stuff stanks! All brands are pretty close, I dig federal, Winchester, and cci, all fun brands, all good for pliggity plinkin'.:D

Nice pistol choice...I love my 1970's (made in Belgium) Browning Challenger. Sounds like you have the hunting ammo figured out. I'd suggest buying a box or two of sub sonic match ammo. Ely a popular brand. More accurate, but the real advantage to me is that sub sonic is a LOT quieter. More like a loud balloon pop. Especially in my bolt action single shot old Remington "targetmaster".

99% of my rimfire stuff is target shooting... so I start with CCI SV and then go up in quality/price (SK Std+, Wolf Match, etc). When shooting speed plates, I'm currently working through the last couple of boxes of Federal AutoMatch (nothing match about it...)

For plinking, etc. nothing wrong with whatever you can get in bulk. For hunting, nothing wrong with the same stuff, as long as it gives you the accuracy you need (ie, headshots on a grouse at 25+ yards vs. a pie plate at same distance).

I would hazard a guess that CCI MiniMags are *the* round to compare to for hunting and other general purpose stuff...

AHH!! you just saved my sanity!!

i remember reading an article in OUTDOOR LIFE when i was a kid. it was a comparison article about yellowjacket vs. Stingers vs MINIMAG..

i couldnt for the life of me remember MINIMAGS..thanks.

.22lr Aguila and .22lr Aguila match

I also have random boxes or 500 rounds from different stores (Remington, mostly).

i think the .22 is my favorite caliber of all time.

giddy fun. relatively inexpensive. my friends are setting up an informal 2-gun challenge. it will be a yard sale..i am not that great of a shot.

Ammo choices.........

If you can find it, I like the Remington Target. Not quite as good as the top priced stuff, but better than the bulk plinking ammo.

I've actually started shooting the .17HMR more than the .22

Maybe it's just me but it seems more accurate. Plus it's flat shooting out to 150 yards.

I've always wanted one but never got around to it.
I suppose this is my ersatz...with Aim Point.
Every time I take it out I wonder why don't I shoot it more.

At $10+ per box of 50, I'll shoot 22lr and use Lapua Center-X or other premium ammo. Still cheaper than 17HMR and just as accurate. Only advantage the 17HMR brings is the flat shooting aspect, great for varmint hunting but more wind drift, etc.

i havent gotten it. i bought my BIL one for Christmas because he is the worst shot i've ever encountered in my entire life. i am gonna plumb him up. it is NICE!!

i WANT the new ruger Mark-4!! it looks cool with the hinged barrel for easy cleaning. but i asked, Ruger refused to pay CA the hostage fee to sell it here, so i cant buy it. and my mom freaked when i asked her to buy it for herself, and give it to me if she hated it. (plan blew up in my face)

SOOOO...Buckmark it is. at least is is less expensive.

then a varmint (LVT?) 10-22 and i am done with all gun purchases forever. :D

CDNN just had a few flavors of Buckmark for under $300... of course, in Cali the DROS fees, FFL fees, etc. are expensive... probably cheaper to buy from someone's inventory.

I would love to pick up a .22 pistol. The smaller, the better. The reason is that I need to renew my CCW and have to start carrying for work.

you bring up an excellent point. i dont think a .22 is a bad defense gun. most of us shoot one better anyways. and a 1600fps segmented round is wicked.

I'd reconsider that and look close at teh compact 380s and 9mms on the market...

rusnak 01-31-2017 09:26 AM

^ Yes, sir. I have a Glock 9mm. But I find that with flashlights, it's the small powerful one that I always carry. The key here is always. The better it's concealed, the more I'll carry it. Because strapping a gun is not customer friendly. And I was practically born to shoot. I can shoot anything once it's sighted in. The most likely scenario is less than 12 feet away.

Off Gunbroker last year...Beretta 21A, .22 LR. A surpisingly fun shooter.
Flawless with CCI Mini Mags
Blue one will go into g/f's purse, the pretty one (NIB) is a safe queen.
I pack a .380 - Arizona!

I have my dad's .22 LR bolt action that he grew up with on the farm. I can send rounds through the same hole all day with that thing, from across the yard. I need to pick your brains though when it comes to firearms. I know nothing about them, only how to shoot whatever is in the corner of the porch at the old farmhouse, and it's a wicked pile of different stuff..
