Thinking about a Wheel "Spoon", thoughts?

The ex father in law had a very nice NIB Colt Python I always admired, it will be son's someday, but I digress.

What would be a good one to look at? I know Jeff H. loves the cowboy action ones and I have considered them, but what else does everyone like? I am not looking for a carry piece or a $4,000 investment.

Thanks!

Smith and Wesson 626. Ruger makes the GP100 for a bit less $.

I have an older S&W 66. Also a good choice! In my opinion, if it isn't a Python a good revolver starts with Smith and ends with Wesson!

My favorite double action revolver is my old S&W Model 19. Light, handy, accurate, and the smoothest action in the business. I shoot nothing but .38 Specials out of mine (actually my own handload that mimics .38 Special performance, but uses .357 mag brass). If you don't reload, you will still find .38 Specials to be about the cheapest centerfire ammo out there. On the rare occasion you might want to load it with full house .357 magnums, it will shoot those with aplomb as well.

Wheel gun..............

I like the pre WWII Colt Officers Models in 38 Special and 22 rimfire. Nice size, weight and usually have an excellent trigger. Sights are adjustable for both windage and elevation. This is an E and I frame gun, same as the Python so there are lots of grip options. Here is one from 1930 in 38 Special. Custom grips showing a deer grazing with a cougar waiting to pounce from the tree.

S&W 686. Crazy s*** accurate. I don't know why; just very very accurate. 357 but shoots target load wadcutter .38s beautifully.

Love my S&W 67.

Seems S&W is the consensus. Pick the one you like.

You aren't really narrowing it down much. What caliber, and what action (single or double)?

Do you want to learn to shoot a revolver? Look at a .22, a Single-Six for single action, or a nice K frame Smith in .22 for a double action.

Something that won't cost tons to shoot and is a home defense firearm? .357 magnum is awful versatile. .38 special can be shot out of a .357 for comfort and economy. But there's something to be said for a dedicated .38 as well. I'd love to have a nice model 14 S&W.

Want a .44 magnum? Something really big and powerful? Can be pricey to shoot, and quite a handful for a first revolver, but it is special, and if you can load your own, very flexible. Blackhawks, Redhawks, or N frame Smiths.

There's military history to look for if that's your bag, small carry pieces, police duty revolvers, cowboy guns, or hunting guns. You can figure out what size you want J frame Smiths and D frame Colts up to N frames and Super Redhawks. Don't overlook Dan Wesson or the Colt Troopers (both old and the Mk series) while you look. Regardless a quality American made revolver is worth having, you'll get good advice, but don't buy to meet someone else's standards.

In very broad terms, S&W makes my favorite double action revolvers, Colt makes my favorite single actions, and Ruger makes more rugged and durable examples of both, at significantly less cost than either. S&W and Colt make very nicely finished revolvers with very smooth actions, but both can be on the more delicate side compared to the equivalent Rugers. Accuracy is a wash between the three makes. S&W and Colt are more aesthetically pleasing; Rugers are fairly plain "using" guns.

Jeff sums it up for me. I owned a Python for a number of years. No doubt a awesome revolver but was going to need expensive service before long so I moved on. Picked up a utility Ruger.. GP100 is a nice balance between function and cost. Plain..I don't think so.

686 is tough to beat, one with a 6 inch barrel is the droid you are looking for.

My brother's S&W .357 loaded with .38 or .38+P is a pleasure to shoot all day long. The magnum loads beat me up a little bit, but it is pretty sweet with those too.

The ss 686 or blued 586 SW I think is the way to go. Look for an early one in the box. They are available. The SW mdl 27 is a 357 on the big n frame...always was a deluxe revolver. Then either the Colt Officers Mdl in 22lr, or SW k22 aka mdl 17 in 22lr can not be beat. I would be looking for pinned and recessed SW or post war colt officers mdl. If you had a Python I would go Diamondback in 22 as the companion gun.

Can't go wrong with most of the suggestions offered imo, I've had mine for decades....in order of purchase...

S&W M27 .357 6.5" (p &r for Tabs approval )
Colt Diamondbsck .22lr 6" (my fav to shoot)
S&W M629 .44 mag 8 3/8 (mags are a cannon, specials are more than potent)

Can't go wrong with Rugers....my daily carry in my pocket is a sweet trigger, striker fired LC9S 9mm

But the one I'm reaching for if the shtf is my old Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP ...bought it in '80.

I'm just glad I didn't know this board then...I learned not to visit spoon stores way back, and I am NOT a spoonaholic like the rest of these guys either
