IPad Pro
We are an artsy family.
Everyone paints and draws. I have several digitizing tablets as well as a 21 inch Cintiq. My daughter uses the Cintiq almost exclusively these days. My wife has expressed interest in trying digital painting / drawing but I think is intimidated by the Cintiq and Photoshop. It's her birthday next week so I got her the big iPad Pro along with the Apple Pencil. Gave it to her today. All I can say is wow. The 12 inch tablet is stunning. Feels great in your hands. The pencil is really really nice. Nice heft and solid. Makes my Wacom pencils feel like toys. Added the Procreate app. Impressive feature set, layers, importable and custom brushes, filters, effects. Looks like it replaces at least 80% of Photoshop and it only costs $6.00 All 3 together make for a very impressive combination. I may have to get another for myself.

I've been an 8" tablet kind of guy, but I'm looking to go with a larger 10-12" next time. Boy that looks much worse in writing than it did in my head.
A 10-12" tablet, with a mouse and external keyboard can be a laptop replacement for me. Really glad your wife likes the tablet. I think a lot of us are heading that direction! Much better value!

My beloved cintiq died late last year. Decided to try the iPad Pro.
Just as an instrument for drawing I like it. The pen is responsive with good thick and thin. Zero lag. My problem is entirely with the work flow. Am using primarily Pro-Create. Can't open multi layer psd files. I break the image down and then reassemble it in photoshop later. And have to save everything through the goddamn cloud to get it back to my real computer. There are a dozen issues like this. Have an app called Duet that lets me USB the thing to the iMac and use it like my old tablet. But it is buggy. Waiting to see what Wacom has coming this fall.

Tired of carrying multiple devices. Was playing around with a friends Yoga and liked it.

I carry my 8" tablet with an external bluetooth keyboard. I've made two business trips without a laptop. I can use VPN to get to my desktop and then do "everything". The only issue, the screen is really small. This is why I'm looking to go a bit larger.

I need to be able to have windows open from typically three different apps and have simultaneous access to them. That and the types of apps, tablets just don't have robust enough offerings for what I need.

But for serious work, I need a PC. So, I use a VPN to connect to my drafting machine and do the work remotely on the tablet. I have fixed a drafting model this way.

I am now addicted to a tablet I can carry around like my Moleskines.
The new Wacom seems to have the same weakness, a lack of usable programs. Corel draw? Really? When working I'll use auto desk sketchbook, Procreate, photoshop, illustrator and in design. Stupid IOS makes bouncing between them a pain. Apple needs to decide if it's a tool for artists or a toy for tween girls.

Surface Pro is really sweet but the user is still tethered.
Desktop solutions are not where the holes are. It's untethered, portable devices, where the industry is lacking.

I'm pretty sure the lack of attention paid to multiple windows is to some degree a by product of limited screen real estate. On a standard 10" tab there is barely enough space for multiple windows to offer much functionality. As in, the windows are only as useful as the amount of content they can hold and the room one has to work with that content. Hoping the bigger tablet offerings will become popular enough that they focus attention on that deficient aspect of tablets.

The Surface Pro 5 should be out in a few months. I expect it to have a bigger screen than the 4, which had a bigger screen than the SP3, which had a bigger screen than the SP2 /1. Pen-feel is great. Set the zoom to 1:1 and use reading glasses. (tiny pixels = lots of windows/info on screen)

Surface Pro 4 is WiFi only. You can connect it to your phone via WiFi.
How about the Samsung Tabpro S2, due to be released at the end of the month? http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/2/9/14558220/galaxy-tabpro-s-2-specs-leak Compared to the i7 Surface Pros, it falls a little short (i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). But it comes in 4 versions, 2 of which are LTE.

That Surface studio is the bomb.
I made the mistake of upgrading to the new Wacom 27 with touch capability. Total disruption of my of workflow and production speed with the absence of of the sliders on the back, replaced with the silly remote which I am know shackled to since the POS touch screen does not work. I have a Surface pro which is nice (albeit a bit of a novelty) for airplane and meeting work; I love the feeling of the pen to screen as well as the intuitive touch screen. Ideally, I would love the surface studio to be the silver bullet to solve my Cintiq issues and allow me to replace my laptop, but I'm not sure if it can handle my 200+ mb sketchup models and largel .psd files. |
