Razors By Mail
My search foo may not be up to snuff, but I couldn't find a thread about the various razor clubs, etc.
Since I am basically on the road two weeks a month, I have duplicated my "stuff" into a a seperate but equal Dopp Kit & Toiletry Bag. Replenishment of my razors costs about $60 every two months or over $300 scooters a year. No a lot of money, but still. Does anyone have experience with the various mail order groups: Harry's, Dollar Shave Club, etc. or Dorco? I found Dorco on this site: Forget Dollar Shave Club; Buy the Same High Quality Razors for a Third of the Price Pace 6 Combo Set, (SXA1000 & SXA1040) - Dorco USA I'd like any real world experiences. Thanks! |
I've been using Harry's for the last year. No complaints, I shave daily now, never a dull razor. Good quality. Don't recall exact cost but seems cheaper than the store brands that take a key to get into.

I've been using the old school safety razor in the mechanical single blade shaver. 3 dollars worth of blades last me a month of shaving daily. Have to take one's time or you'll cut the **** out of your face lol
|
I switched to an old school single blade safety razor. Less skin irritation and I can buy 100 replacement blades for $20.

I go through less than $50 of Gillette Good News disposables a year - bought at COSTCO in bulk.

I use a Gillette mach 3 and I found long ago that it is significantly cheaper to buy razors on e-bay.
I can get 10 razor cartridges for $16.99 with free shipping. That's about $2 a month for a high quality shave. But, make sure they are the real deal. If they say "blades that fit mach 3" or "blades for mach 3" and don't show a Gillette package, they are not OEM and are generic copies or knock-offs They are still decent, but are much cheaper i.e. 24 blades for $17. |
I have a heavy beard so the plastic stuff is not viable. That plus I have three moles in the shave zone. With the cheap stuff and single razors it could be, as Bill Cosby once said, a self sacrifice.
The Dorco option is looking the best so far. Any Dollar Shave Club members? |
I find my Schick Quattro blades last forever. I don't spend anywhere near $300 per year....
I do find it helps to shave every day...and dry off the blades after each shave. |
Paul for shaving around bumps and stuff the old double edge are really nice actually. I used to stay tons of irritation and now I don't have trouble.
Get a nice razor like this and plenty of blades. For $60-70 you will be set for a year or more. Edwin Jagger DE89L Double Edge Safety Razor | Lined Chrome |

When I took my beard off 3 years ago I went electric for the first time. I was surprised how good the electric shavers are today compared to 20 years ago when I had tried the last time. It is very cost effective. It also takes less time and doesn't require a sink. I shave in my car on days I commute on 4 wheels. Blade replacements are $40 and I do that about every 9 months.

I use Amazon suscribe and save. 5% off the Regular Amazon price. If you setup 5 things per month, it is 15% off.

Cheapest Mach 3 Turbo refill is $16.99 for 8.

I use Schick ST2 slim twin available in packs of 12 at the local super market, CVS, Walgreen's. I believe around $10.00 per pack. Current coupon special two packs for $.99ea. I am Italian with very course curly beard and the tendency for ingrown hairs. Also plenty of Italian nooks an cranny's and edges to steer around. The ST2 is a double edge blade with very slim maneuverable head. I shave in the shower daily so the steam softens my whiskers. I get about a week out of each razor. rarely a nick, ingrown hair or rash that isn't caused by me rushing or using an old razor. I also used regular soap as a lubricant until it started drying out my skin. I now use a gel such as edge or similar with a moisturizer. I can get down into the cleft on my chin and close by my nose and lip with out issue.
I keep two or three new in my dopp kit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1487450915.jpg |
Like some of the other guys here, I have switched to an old fashioned double edge safety razor. I get 3-4 shaves per blade, and just picked up 100 feather blades for $19. The shave is better albeit easier to cut yourself, and I save myself $20/month so I can afford life's luxuries like bourbon and styptic pencils ;)
