Disclaimer:
I'm always super aware when walking or driving near any train tracks.
I also don't wear earbuds when walking or biking because apparent I'm nuts and actually like the sound of nature... plus not wearing earbuds has saved my rear a few times while biking.

Hate to sound like a grumpy old man (the T.O.P. band-mates were probably my age) but I think it is part of our distracted society... people just are not aware of their surroundings any more.

I suppose the ambient sound in the city could be a factor as far as hearing a train coming up on you.

Dunno, also seems like we are drifting away from common sense, even when I am driving through an intersection with lights and drop down barriers I'm on full alert when I drive over train tracks.

“I saw that the train was pretty close already, so I knew he was going to get hit, so I just looked away,” she told CTV Calgary. “It was too close to even just say anything.”
I thought women were good at screaming?

Maybe just in the movies.

Early photograph of one of the first near misses, teenage boys playing on the tracks had to slip between the ties and hang there to save themselves from being run over...

Seriously, people don't realize that you can be a few feet away from a train and get suck into it when it's moving, there's a vacuum effect. They think that you can stand 4 feet from the tracks and be just fine like standing 4 feet from traffic, but a train moving at speed will pull you right under. I bet a lot of these cases are caused by that.

Snowmobiling a couple of weeks ago and crossed tracks that were in the middle of nowhere.

A couple of hours later we get word that a rider was just killed at the tracks we just crossed.

I guess he felt no need to look both ways.
