we got hammered by rain this weekend!!

i live in Sonoma Wine country. just moved here (relatively). my first full winter for sure. i hung a rain gauge at work friday and this morning..damn near 4" of rain over the weekend. creeks are swollen, and the big river near us is cresting 38' at noon today. i think the banks are 32'?

my back sliding door has a leak at the top. i stapled up some plastic sheet and it was an awesome temp fix. dry as a bone in the house. the outside, looks like all the trees puked.

they closed schools this morning. wow. i need to find my way near bodega bay to check on one of our problem sections of HWY1. it is sliding somewhat.

i feel our CA drought is gonna be over soon. at least for NorCAL.

Down here we get the tail end of most of the storms. Although we're ahead in our rain total, I don't have any confidence the drought is over. You got hammered. We're expecting maybe a quarter of an inch.

Not too bad here in the South Bay. Saw the news about Napa though...

I read somewhere that we are better off with long periods of light rain, not a few days of heavy rain, to get over the drought. But I may be misremembering.

I was up in the addict 4 o'clock in the morning putting a bucket under a small pin hole roof leak,no ceiling damage thanks god it leaked exactly through the fan box in the ceiling.
I'm gonna attempt to seal the hole as soon as this rain is over.

There is liable to be some flooding this week. Heard the Truckee River was kicking Reno's ass. Did all my rain gutters Friday night, took care of my parent's house a few weeks ago.

Moses will be catching a few feet of snow at his new crib up by Northstar. Hope he has plenty of firewood for when the lights go out.

We've emptied out 1/2" of rain the last two times we've emptied the rain gauge here in the OC. Nice and steady as she goes is the way to do it. I was digging after a gopher in the garden the other day and the ground was nice and moist to a foot or more deep. The lawn is slowly coming back after no watering all summer.

My wife told me about that tree falling. Glad I got to go thru is as a kid.

The Intellicast web site shows a lot of moisture heading towards the coast right now. Could be a gully washer for sure. Maybe that new storm drain system will get a workout after all.

Yeah, a lot of the roads in that area are just above river bottom and become impassible when the river is over it's banks. Not a good situation for school buses to be caught in.

My gutters couldn't take the flow last night and started overflowing, even thought they are clean. I was happy the roof held up, this definitely was a stress test!

It is nice to live on top of the hill and about 5 feet up from the street. Will never have flooding here ... Let's hope we get some good snow pack out of this up in the Sierra. This much rain is pretty useless down here close tot the bay once the local reservoirs are full.

National Weather Service has pretty much all of Napa covered in red, and Morgan Hill to Redding covered in Green. Red means start looking for the emergency kit and tie the boat to the long rope, and Green means buy batteries and dry socks.

Better hope the hill is stable. The west hills of Portland experience slides from time to time. Every year there is a "street of dreams" home show. Showplace homes worth $ millions. One year, one of them slid into the property below. I don't know how it all worked out legally...

(edit) Actually Western Oregon sees slides frequently. It's when roads and housing is involved that it becomes newsworthy.

Yes, the hill is great. It is not much of a hill, maybe 25 feet elevation change in an 1/8 mile to get to the "bottom". I'd be leery buying a house on a real hill in CA for mud slides and earthquakes ...

We are getting unusual amount of rain this time around. I did some stuff for a couple of neighbors, now the word is out and the entire neighborhood has my phone number on speed dial asking me how to deal with their hill side water. There aint a thing I can do now in the rain. crazy times many homes are flooding on our hill sides

I think those who issue the building permits should bear some of the responsibility, but they never do.

Actually, no. Its the architect and the landscape engineers that need to incorporate that as part of their plan but that cost money. Builders only build to plan provided to them by owners. Lots of hillside homes are flooding because it dams up water and it has no where to go. The poorly designed additions do not help.

Vash, sounds like you found the leaking issue. I bet you have compromised flashing under there or they didn't pull the stucco paper all the way to the door frame
