Ive driven about 3k miles in a 2015 G, not mine. Engine sounds great and pulls like a train for such a heavy vehicle. MPG sux, light foot = 14MPG and heavy foot = single digit MPG. Feels solid and well put together, but time will tell as the one Ive driven is still quite new (9k miles). Driving dynamics are meh. Steering is vague at best. Handling is as expected from a truck based vehicle. For example MLs handle way better and feel more dynamic than the G. They're not big inside, four adults ok, 5 not so much. Trunk space is not bad. Would I buy one? No. I do like their looks though. And come the zombie apocalypse I'm grabbing my buddy's G and taking on all comers.

My biz partner has one, the 550 (2014 I think). He and his wife wanted one forever. He bought it used with very little mileage on it. Of course he saved a TON off msrp. Benz's drop like a rock pricewise after the first year or two. They HATE it. Somewhat comfortable for driver / passenger but the backseat experience is, in their words, HORRIBLE. Very stiff. He's had it less than a year and is rolling out of it now.

I know nothing about them except that they look great. True no no nonsense SUV.
I'd love to own one but they are ridiculous money down here.

Would a Cayenne be better value for your sister?

over priced, small as **** inside, not enjoyable to drive. Usually ladies who try to make statement drive them around here. Even with all the new tech they throw in it, still feels like an old truck. Save your sister from a mistake. Plus talk about expensive as hell parts.

They are a real off road vehicle if you want that. Personally I think they are about the ugliest vehicle Mercedes has ever sold. Rotten re-sale value.

It is a 37 year old military / off road vehicle chassis. And you can only get it with a large V8, much bodywork that isn't off road compatible, and auto unless you get a grey market import that is properly equipped (that would be a diesel with a stickshift).

That's what I know. I wouldn't own one (unless it was a proper one as described) and then, there is plenty of other cool old iron to chose from that's been sold new in the US.

A G Class wagon showed up at one of our Hummer Club off-road events. This is just H1's, so no H2 bloated Tahoes. The trail was 2N17X in the San Bernardino Mtns and a moderately difficult trail (Google it). Several members discouraged him from going, for fear we'd be held up or spend the day extracting him. Let me tell you...that thing blew me away. It did GREAT! Very capable vehicle.

Unfortunately, my experience with my wife's POS 550SL will forever deter me from owning another MB.

^Bolded. This is like some Land Rovers and the Jeep Wrangler - people buy them for their looks, then discover they're too biased towards off-road performance for comfort and hate them. The Wrangler is supposedly the most quickly trade-in vehicle in the US. A lot down the road from me has five late-model Jeeps in their front row.

And off-roaders suffer the same curse as sports cars - people pay a fortune for capability, then grouse about the lack of amenities, so manufacturers add luxuries - only to have everyone squawk about harsh ride for a "luxury" vehicle.

YOu failed to tell us why she wanted one? If durability or reliability, why not a jeep or a Land Cruiser. I hate the latest gen LC, but will buy that over the new Benz G-Wag. anyday till Sunday

Don't get me wrong, they are your typical Trooper and I am sure the military ones are great vehicles but just not sure about the US civilian models. I think people often think that a Civilian model of the same vehicle is the same as their military counter part. They are mil spec'ed.

One of my gay client has one. Its always clean and shiny and he takes his clients in it all the time. I asked him about it a couple of times. He seem to rave about it and loves the damn thing. I do know the dealer in Santa Monica takes cares of it for him and he tells me that it isn't cheap to own. He know where the 4WD selector is but claims he has never needed to use it because the vehicle is so good that it never get stuck in the rain going up his steep driveway. Ture story. BTW, he's a pretty damn cool guy.
