Android tablet recommendations?

I need a new tablet. I just use it for casual reading and web surfing, and the occasional movie when traveling. I have an HP TouchPad which I ported from PalmOS to Android. It was actually a great device for its time; pity that HP was such an incompetent company and quashed it. It had decent storage and built-in inductive charging; they fact that I got it for $50 was just a bonus.

In trying to buy a replacement, I'm finding it difficult to compare apples to apples. What I want is something physically similar (>7" screen) but with an updated OS and storage. What I don't want is a bunch of immutable bloatware and Chinese spyware. Inductive charging would be nice, but I'm not seeing a lot of tablets with it.

Do you guys have any favorites?

I've had a Kindle Fire HD for about 4 years now. It's done everything I have wanted it to do. The quality of the video is top level. If ever needing help with it, I just click on the assistant and they appear on the screen to help. (sometimes a real cutie shows up!) Never takes more than a minute for them to be there.
I'm sure there are tablets that are better, but for the price, the Kindle is hard to beat.

For a solid, inexpensive tablet, I'd suggest a refurbished Samsung Tab A, 8.0" - $115 at Walmart

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Refurbished-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-A-8.0-16GB-Smoky-Titanium-8-Wi-Fi-SM-T350NZAAXAR/48944419?action=product_interest&action_type=title&beacon_version=1.0.2&bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&client_guid=741ae505-3a43-4da7-8678-b3d27e6c857c&config_id=106&customer_id_enc&findingMethod=p13n&guid=741ae505-3a43-4da7-8678-b3d27e6c857c&item_id=48944419&parent_anchor_item_id=48956603&parent_item_id=48956603&placement_id=irs-106-t1&reporter=recommendations&source=new_site&strategy=PWVUB&visitor_id=YekHnRLP6Lb3xWSapQG-xg

It is available as WiFi only and with most of the cellular net works. I would also consider the later model the Tab E 8.0.

Best bang for the buck I've found in a 7' tab is the ASUS Nexus 7 2nd gen, 2013 model, not 2012.

Only Android product i've owned that has regular updates to the most recent OS.

You may need to shop for it, they are in high demand and still comparatively pricey.

I had picked mine up as a refurb for ~$80.00 off Amazon. Recently the screen cracked and I've been waiting for a deal to come around to get another.

.
Good advice. I had the Nexus 7 2012 and then bought my wife the Gen 2 (2013)....
Long story short, she loves the 2013 is much improved over the 2012. I got frustrated with my 2012 model, sold it for $60 and 4 months ago bought the newly released Kindle Fire HD-8. A big plus is putting books, music and pictures on a micro SD card.

Kindle App store is not the best, but coming along. I heard there is a way to add Android apps, I'm not there yet. Hard to go wrong for the price.

I bought my wife one a few years ago; she likes it, but I don't really want to be locked into Amazon's ecosystem.

I had actually been looking at that model. As a bonus, it has removable storage

We've had good luck with the Samsung Galaxy Tab A (wife and son both have one; I've got a smaller Tab 7). All were found at Costco for a good price. No real issues (just disable the native Samsung aps and install the Google standard aps).

Samsung, Amazon are both solid. The Fire 7 is so-so but so cheap to purchase it's practically disposable, I bought one solely for looking up recipes in the kitchen. $50 and often goes on sale, I got mine for $37... that's cheap digital watch territory.

I pulled the trigger on a Galaxy Tab A 8. I'll probably end up rooting it on Day One

Thanks for the help!
