Ya gotta respect a talented helicopter pilot.

Talent with a capital T... and Efficiency with a capital E.

That guy spends a lot of time in the much fabled 'zone'. Wonder what he does for recreation.

considering he has only one engine ... what kind of margin for mechanical error does he have?
I would think "none"?

And that kind of flying must be brutal on the airframe and components, no?

Seems that those loads don't weigh all that much so most of the stress would come from manuevering. The density of the air is pretty low as well (heavy fog). I'd imagine that guy could well be ex-navy as that seems to be routine for them.

Beautiful to watch...like a pro sports player. At the top of their game.
I love to watch someone who's the best at what they do. The cream of the crop.
Thanks for the vid.

How does that cable catch/release work? I don't see any ground crew working the line.

I'm assuming he has someone at the pick up end that connects it and he can remotely disconnect.

That cannot be cost effective. Helicopters are very expensive to maintain.

There is a guy not seen hooking up the load to the cargo hook. And yes, he's pretty much operating in the shaded area of the height velocity diagram (aka Dead Man's Curve) nearly the whole time. There wouldn't really be much of a recovery to a safe landing in case of engine failure being single engine only. Even with two engines he would have his hands full.

Completely legal. As long as the pilot is aware of the risk involved which I'm sure he is. It's the nature of the business. When I flew air ambulance (20 years) nearly every approach is a steep approach to a small or tight LZ or hospital pad. Engine failure (single engine) during approach wouldn't be pretty. Every helicopter pilot accepts this.

He flies that thing like someone's shooting at him. Its impressive to watch but I wouldn't want to be near him, you can only fly that way for so long....

I sell Christmas trees with my crew. Every July or so I head up to look at the trees. I was talking to an ex-hippie who grows them. He was recovering after being shocked when the cable of his helicopter hit a power line. He was on the ground near the cable. It arced over, hit him and knocked him 20 feet. He said that he was badly burned, and "the head of (his) my dick turned black from the heat from my zipper"! I almost fell over laughing at the story.

On the way back to California, there were bad wildfires. Somwhere near Yreka we saw a helicopter pilot putting out the fire with water that he scooped out of a swimming pool. He took that help INTO the pool. Dudes are bad-ass.

They use helicopters when a truck can't get close, or when they are on a hillside or snow has blocked the access road.

Rarely do they use a helicopter as in the above video. It's better to shuttle them via trailer and hand load them. And that bundle looks loose. Trees will break.

Here are some photos that I took of the pilot fighting the fire along I-5.
