Boat Disposal

How does one deal with a sailboat that may have reached the end of it's useful life? At least the end of time/effort/money I'm willing to put into it.

'71 McGregor that I just don't use and would feel bad donating somewhere.

Any ideas that don't border on criminal activity or insurance fraud? I thought about a viking funeral, but it's fiberglass.

You might inquire if there is a local Sea Scout group nearby. Some of them perform cleanup/upgrades on donated boats and then sell them to fund their program.

Is there such a thing as spare parts boats. Someone with a 71 McGregor might be very pleased to have it.

I sold a Mac 21 for $1200 a few years ago. It wasn't bristol. Also, donation is a great idea.

I have another old sailboat now that I will either sell on craigslist or donate. Unless it is just a total roach, someone will want it.

I'd buy one of these and sink it in the local waters.

On my 21' SeaRay I/O speedboat, I sold the trailer, the lower unit, and the motor (recovered about what I had into it money wise) The fiberglass hull is now part of the gun range backstop in my back field....no real usable parts.

A sailboat could be parted out for lines, hardware, controls, windows, but still don't know what to do with a big chunk of FG.

List it in the free section of Craig's list, it will be gone in a day. Donating it is not a bad idea even if you think it is a crap boat. You will get the right off and they will be able to move it. I looked in to donating a boat once. There are certain criteria it must meet before they will accept it. Most notably a clean title. Lastly, The hardware on the boat is not unique to MacGregor. Mast, cleats, winches, hatches, pumps, port lights, etc, etc. Depending on where you are there are salvagers that will take it off your hands, strip it of it's useful hardware, separate what can be sold as recyclable and then scrap the hull.

Reading about totaled boats after the latest hurricane, it seems many are stripped of useful parts and the fiberglass hull is sawed up with a chainsaw and taken to a landfill.

chop the keel and mount on a trailer frame to create a mini house? Check with local fire dept and see if they want to burn it for training (a few mobile homes down hte road got burnt down this way)
