That's a nice katana, he mused.
But certainly not a Cold Steel Katana...

J/k, really cool blade!

I am descended from Samurai. Not sure if that's the real thing, but if so, then obviously it's interesting to me for sure.

Very cool!

But if I bought another knife (much less a sword) my wife would probably use it on me.

On a side note, I have a sword very much like the plain one underneath the ornate one. Seeing as it was left behind by a renter and the blade appears to be SS I presumed it had very little value (but I keep it anyway).

Cool item. Imagine how much the world has changed since it was created. I don't know anything about swords but I have seen pawn stars 3 times. I am surprised it is so shiny and pristine. Do you polish and clean a 400 year old sword?

Someone on the board used to sell them. Had a website with descriptions and everything. I wish I'd have been able to afford one back then. Not sure if the guy is still around, and I don't remember who it was.

Went back, found it in a search. It was a guy that went by "Alf" that lived in Seattle, I think. He was very knowledgeable.

I'm surprised not to see the layered steel, or is that called Damascus steel?
I thought that was a hallmark of those old Japanese swords.

Cheers Richard

You are thinking of damascus steel, and it indeed is layered. The construction of an authentic Japanese Katana would be the forging of several pieces of steel together to form the blade. The cutting edge piece would be very hard steel, the spine a more flexible piece and the side pieces somewhere in the middle. With this arrangement, the sword can be sharpened to a razor edge yet can flex about 30 degrees! When in combat, the Samurai would turn the blade 90 degrees to deflect a blow to protect his sword's edge. The wood "sheath" is just a storage container. The real hardware has the wood blade, who's purpose was to keep all the bits and pieces together in one place. Nice sword!

Alfred Tan. Don't know if he's still in the biz or not. Doesn't look like his site has been updated in a couple years. Japanese Swords Arms & Armor Home

The blade looks legit from where I'm sitting. Too pricey and too short for me, but I'm a user, not a collector.

If it's total legit I think it's worth more than asking at auction.
I think it's a Tachi with the tang cut off to make a shortish katana, common practice in the era. That would explain the lack of markings (mei).

It's not this one, is it?

According to the district attorney’s office, Medina got into an argument over Medina’s girlfriend with his roommate, 36-year-old Josh Sutter, on Jan. 31, 2015. The argument became physical, and Medina fatally stabbed Sutter multiple times with a sword.
