Poised for growth: 10 cars under $10k

https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/Articles/2017/03/14/10-under-10k

Some of these are questionable. For several, I'd say their day has passed, and they have already begun their slow descent to oblivion. If they were going to run, they would have by now. Decades ago.

I agree with the El Camino. Distinctive and unique. The rest...not so sure.

Cars are horrible investments, but you seem to think they are good investments. Why is that?

Hagerty's motive is clear. Money to them. Selling value stated policies, it's to their interest to see values rise...they charge premiums based on a car's value.

I'd say the f body Mustangs. These have been creeping up for the last few years and I dont see any letdown in prices. These old ones, say about 95 are well built, great motors, and sound great. I would drive one.

Maybe I reached a wrong conclusion, but you seem to have started several threads here that make the car's value a consideration. Just curious why...

My advice would be to buy what you like and let value follow whatever path it will.

Pretty much everything 1960s and 1970s, that ship has sailed. That generation of collector is starting to age out of the hobby. The next big run will be on the 1980s and 1990s. Some have already gone nuts, like the Testarossa basically tripling in value over the last 2-3 years. There are others that can still be had for cheap, at least for now.

I think Mustangs 87ish to 93 are the next Tri Five Chevys, easy to find, parts are available, easy to work on. Can be quick and made to handle.

How do you figure? Collector cars have always been generational. It's the same reason why 1950s iron is no longer longer hot, the generation that lusted over 1957 Chevys is largely past their driving and collecting days. I'm 36 and grew up dreaming of exotics that are already crazy money and Japanese sports cars like the RX7 (own one), Z32 300ZX TT, NSX, Skyline, 911, etc. Those cars are the next big bubble, and you can already start to see it with the Testarossa, NSX, Supra, clean Fox body Mustangs, 911, 348, 355, and others. Honestly I look forward to the day where local car shows don't consist of a bunch of identical Mustangs and Camaros with speakers playing do-wop music....

I agree with Matt 100%. The only caveat is that the generations after Gen-X don't give a S#it about cars. I think the 80's and 90's Supra's and RX7's will climb for sure, maybe even the 355 and 360 F-cars, but what's after that?

The Millennial's drove their mom's Prius and Honda CRV, but only so they could get to the Apple store to buy a new phone. I don't know a single person in my daughter's (28) generation that has car aspirations.

It's the same with guns. My Millennial son-in-law knocked over a Winchester 1886 Deluxe in 45-90 just to get to a $500 AR15 I have in the back of my safe. They grew up aspired to iPhones and Xbox. I really believe the last car collecting generation is in your age group Matt.

Good to know. I hope the bottom totally drops out of '60s cars. I would love to have a mid-50s to 1968 boat to cruise around in. I'm about to retire. My days of saving and investing for the future are over. I have money to spend on what I enjoy, and I don't give a rip if it loses value while I'm enjoying it.

It hasn't passed me by; I'm 49 and do more car hobbying now than I ever have (by that, I mean modding/building - only limiting factor for me is if I can afford to do it - don't care at all about a car's "value" or how mods will affect it) .

I think the E30 318is and 325is should join that list.

This will be interesting to see. There are some young guys in their teens and twenties who have a real interest in cars, I see it on some of the BMW forums. But the numbers are small. My 17 year old step son thinks of his car as simply a means to get from A to B.

I think millennials are skipping any enthusiast cars in their younger years and waiting to get the Mini Van or Crossover when they've finally decided to start a family and it's a necessity.
