We did a tour of that place last summer. It is always amazing to see how the truly wealthy lived. It would be cool to have a time machine and be invited to stay there as a close family guest and see it in operation at it's zenith with full staff.

Funny, I grew up in a mobile home and thought it's because my parents were poor. Now I know we were trendsetters!!!!:p

I agree that this is a stupid fad that is induced by a TV show. The only time the tiny house makes any sense is on a permanent foundation in a major urban area where land is super expensive, and buying a small lot saves you money. That gives you a true site-built house for a lower acquisition cost. Otherwise the same money will buy you a much bigger and nicer mobile home that can be installed into either a park or a foundation on your own land, or a bigger and nicer RV or 5th wheel that you can move regularly and park wherever you damn well please.

We bought a really nice used 10 year old 16'x80' house trailer, and put it on a 1 acre lot with a new well, and septic system, and built two entry decks for our daughter's place (only 1/4 mile down the road from us) and had just North of $40,000 into the entire project. I did the decks, landscaping, site leveling, and foundation myself. No reason to spend twice that on 1/3 the size "tiny house".

Have friends I visit in Asheville. Wanted to go solo as I was there for a week. Looked it up on the webs, $90 or so for the tour. I said God Damn and balked. Someday after my ship comes in...........

FWIW, you can buy $10k houses in the old rubber worker "hoods" in Akron all day long. No wheels and neighbors are questionable.

On a side note, did a drive through of the Biltmore location neighborhood and Andie McDowell was taking a walk with a friend and their dogs. Smiled and waved to me as I drove by.

$90....you gotta be chittin' me :(. I toured the place as a teen decades ago....know what I remember most...that it wasn't $90 :)!

Then how do you feel about small, permanently constructed shipping container homes. Our plan is to be ultra efficient and low maintenance. We can retire early if we cut back on our monthly expenditures. You've seen our house, it's not exactly energy efficient!

And KC, having an older significant other means you think about things more. I will be semi retired at 40, by our plans, so we can travel and enjoy life while we can.

When we started construction of our house, we spent two and a half years living in the hall basement. Our living space was 12 x 36. My infant son's room was 5 x 8 with his bed built in. Eventually we built the main house above and moved up.
It was adequate for our needs at the time and would be easier these days with smaller entertainment options.
It was indeed easy to heat.

I like my house, and where I live. However, we are thinking of a downsize simply because our property taxes are through the roof.

If I was single, my options would be much greater.

For retirement, hell yes. I will someday push to downsize once our kids are gone. Though I still somewhat question the shipping container thing. I suspect that you could site build a house that is equally efficient and probably for similar money. I've seen a few shipping containers turned into little hipster shops and they always seem pretty cobbled together. Also for a fun retirement home, an RV of some variety would rock. Keep a home base location and then travel wherever you want.
