Southern Va or north NoCar living?
Hey PP brain trust. Have an opportunity to relocate to the inland part of Southern Va or north North Carolina area. What's it like living down there? Good and bad?
Have work traveled to Charlotte and Richmond and found it nice, but have not stayed there for more than a week. More importantly I have never been in the area between those two cities either. |

My kid brother lives SW of Lynchburg near Smith Mtn. It is kinda "rural" but lovely country. OTOH I ride the Ducati through the NC mountains every year. Of the two I'd choose NC.

Nothing like Charlotte or Richmond....at all.
I love it here, but different strokes as they say... What are your interests etc. and I'll try to provide info for ya...it isn't "big city"... at all, so if you like the bay area...well, it isn't ![]() |

Yeah. I'm moving to Charlottesville in a bit, so I'm biased. Southern VA can mean a lot of things, need to be more specific. Lynchburg/Roanoke is still the "south", other areas more southern/cosmopolitan. Depends on what you like.

General area of VIR. Not being the bay area is a good thing. Interests are all the manly arts, you know like things you generally can't do in the bay area.

South Hill

My mother lives in South Hill area (Union Level actually). I grew up in Portsmouth, so I will agree with others that further inland, that life does seem to slow down quite a bit.

I'll pass on a preemptive Howdy neighbor, I live 20 miles south of Charlottesville but you won't catch me in that "city", the council is doing it's level best to destroy what was once a great place.

I live in Maryland but spend two week a month between Raleigh and Morganton, NC. Most of my time in Raleigh is spent at the AeroMech Department at NCSU so I stay in Cary.
I like Raleigh and could live there: Three hours to the mountains or the beach, excellent little airport, etc. A small town that has both the crunchy Washington and Lee University and VMI side-by-side that I like a lot is Lexington, Va. The down side it that Lexington is a 3 Wood and a long chip from any where. I could live there happily, however. I have heard good things about Winston Salem and Greensboro but I have no direct experience.

I stay in Cary because the hotels are the same as downtown at half the price. I am cheap!

Those areas have something for everyone. Real rural living can be had without living 2 hours from civilization. On the other hand there is enough 'city' with modern diversity if you look for it. I live in Northen Va - so I'm partial.

I've lived in NC all my life (I'm 53 btw)...grew up in Raleigh, spent a bunch of time in Chapel Hill, and am now in Southern Pines/Pinehurst (central part of the state). Shoot me a PM/email anytime.

My wife would love the comment about Charlottesville city council. I have had to walk her away from the TV set local news on MANY occasions based on what goes down in C-ville. Albermarle county leadership is not too far behind.
We live about 20 min west of c-ville on a mountain and love it. That being said- living close to c-ville,but not in it, does have it's advantages. As for South Boston, Danville, Martinsville, etc.. I would strongly suggest visiting those areas prior to committing. Lynchburg is larger, and most of it's money comes from Liberty University- again, I would spend time there to to see if they are right for you. All four of these towns were early-mid 20th century towns, got bypassed with the major interstate system, and have been somewhat left behind. Although there has been some revitalization, these are not uber hip yuppie places full of young vitality. Also.. +1 for Lexington. I would check out Staunton Va as well. nice downtown area. Good theater. Good food. If you aren't raising children and like beer, wine, and good food, research Nelson county Va. 151. I think there are over 15+ wineries/breweries near where I live all within a short drive. It's easy to become a food snob quick out here! ![]() Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 03-27-2017 at 09:50 AM.. |

Check the taxes. VA is pretty rough. Not sure about NC.
If Tennessee is an option then consider it. No state income tax
